This is our main street. I love that this street and its building are older than I am. That each structure has a story to tell, and has historical importance for this area. I love the character of the brick road. This picture perfect main street was part of the reason for me wanting to move to a small town. Its town center where everyone use to gather and shop.
A walk down the street though shows the majority of the shops empy. Some with for rent signs and others with for sale signs. The front window displays are bare. A couple stores are closed but still have all their inventory inside. Like they just closed up shop one day and never came back.
Yesterday the locally owned grocery store just down the street put up going out of business signs. Last week it was a jewelry store having a going out of business sale. They can't compete with Walmart that opened a super center just outside of town.
Is main street America dying?
