During my visit to Cape Cod my mother and I set out on a quest to get a close up view of a lighthouse. We began by typing in “lighthouse” in Google Maps and picking the first one we thought was within reasonable driving distance.
Unfortunately the lighthouse google maps led us too wasn’t exactly easily accessible due to it being at the end of a narrow private road with no parking, but thankfully near by it little gem of a spot called Hyannis Harbor.
We thought it would be cool to check the harbor out, so we found a spot to park, I lit a cigar, and started exploring the area.
It was the first time in my desert dwelling life visiting a proper harbor and it was awesome to see all the different kinds of boats docked, the fishermen processing their catches for the day and the seagulls hanging out nearby hoping to get a piece of what they caught.
There was also this really cool artist shanty area where local artists could showcase and sell their artwork in these colorful shacks.
After my cigar was all smoked out we got a bite to eat at the nearby Spanky’s Clam Shack to try some proper seafood. I tried some lobster and fried clam strips for the first time and my god was it delicious; wish we could get seafood like that in Arizona.
Once we were done with our meal we got back to our car and resumed our quest for a lighthouse.
Taking a chance with Google Maps again we settled for the West Dennis Lighthouse. After a short drive we got to our lighthouse and were actually able to find parking this time.
Admittedly, this wasn’t the tall tower type of lighthouse most people traditionally think of, but we didn’t have time to find a different one and it was accessible so we were glad to be there.
It also had the advantage of residing along a beautiful beach with an awe inspiring view of the sea. After completing our goal, we took a short walk along the beach and got back in the car to make our way back to our friend’s house in Attleboro.
We didn’t get to spend a whole lot of time in Cape Cod, but what few hours we did have was an amazing experience and I hope to have the opportunity to visit again.
