Warty Pumpkins

in #photography7 years ago

Many people like a smooth, unblemished pumpkin to carve for Halloween, others love to carve warty pumpkin varieties. These aren’t afflicted with some awful disease. It is actually natural and not unusual for pumpkins to have bumps.

Years of selective breeding have weeded out this bumpy natural tendency until what we view as normal are unblemished pumpkins. Knuckle Head, Gargoyle and Goosebumps are varieties of warty pumpkin.

I had no idea! I love the warty ones that are actually gourds, but, these have a tendency to look diseased! Oh, I have been brainwashed!

Hi, Melinda! xo

Hi sweetie! Busy here with out of town guests..I'm suffering a bit of Steemit withdrawl! Im trying to broaden my front porch pumpkin horizons!

Oh!! I was just thinking how I am having to work too hard on here! LOL Have fun and enjoy the carbon world. They hug better!xoxox

Those are clever names for those varieties.

I think Goosebumps is my favorite.

Back almost 4o or more years ago I used to work in Market Gardens and remember seeing these warty ones, hadn’t thought about it till your post but yes you never see this type in supermarkets and such anymore, yet they taste just the same

Do you think they are more meaty or better flavor? I have never cooked one.

To be honest the only time I remember cooking them was in a hangi ( a Maori tradition the indigenous people of NZ where the food iis cooked in a pit over heated rocks, and I cant particularly say I noticed any difference

Sounds like a cool memory to have!

It is, its something I helped with or had many a time back there, would love it now LOL

Our local grocery store is selling warty ones as "heirloom variety" and charging $3 more for them.

I've always loved the more unique looking pumpkins and gourds. They're so much more fun. Thanks for posting these!

Heirloom wouls be accurate! They are interesting...$3 more seems silly.

Didn't know that. I like the warty type.

They are more interesting than smoorh and shiny!

I liked the post! I was going through today's and this one caught my eye! Thanks.

Thanks..glad you stopped by!😃
