Today I have a very special photo for you. Back in 2016 we were travelling through New Zealand's North Island. And before we headed towards Tongariro, from where I already showed you a photo, we made a stop in Raglan on the west coast.
I didn't go there for the coast though. Half an hours drive from Raglan the famous Bridal Veil waterfall plunges 55 meters from a cliff in the midst of a lush, green forest. It's already an awesome sight during daytime, when the water of the pool beneath the cascade shines in deep blue colors.
But I wanted to capture a more unique photo. There were already so many beautiful photos of this waterfall to be found on the internet, but what I didn't find was a photo of it during sunset.
And I couldn't understand why. From checking the maps of the area and the position of the sun during sunset it looked like the evening light should directly hit the falls. With a colorful sky overhead this would definitly have the potential for a special photo. All I needed was some luck.
So I went there in the evening. The positive side effect was that, while the viewpoints were still crowded when I arrived, once the sun got a little lower in the sky more and more people left. And when the show began only one other person was there with me to witness this spectacle.
Those are the moments I long for. Visiting distant places, chasing the light, waiting patiently until all the elements fall into place and then enjoying the show... and taking a few photos along the way.
Don't forget to head over to my last magic moment, where I show some awesome light from the German Alps.

wow exceptional landscape photography .. very successful shooting perfect exposure. I love your composition very much. congratulations
Thanks
Oh wow, this is just absolutely magical, I like every detail of it. Well executed and thanks for sharing!
Did you have a gradien filter? Awesomely dramatic light you got! Nice work :D
Yes I used GND (0.6 soft and 0.6 hard I think). But I also combined it with taking multiple exposures. So I blended two for dynamic range. Combining filters with blending is my preferred way to do it
Thanks for the info! I always wanted to try gradient filters but ended up using only Photoshop.
You really nailed the timing on this shot with the thick clouds leaving enough sun peaking through to give this so much character! I love the waterfall half in and half out of the direct sunlight.
Thank you. Yea it was really perfect that evening. I was waiting on this viewpoint for one hour and could watch as the light got better and better. Got quite lucky in the end
Great shot!! The light is awesome ;)
Wow, that doesn't even look real. So nice!
Stunning image. I'd love to go to NZ sometime.
Bravo! Really nice shot. Multiple exposures stacked for this?
I used GND Filters but also had to blend two photos for dynamic range. But not too fancy ;-)
Thank you for all your comments!
