Mattinata è un borgo nella provincia di Foggia, nella regione meridionale italiana della Puglia. Situato nel Parco Nazionale del Gargano e nel Golfo di Manfredonia, sulla costa del promontorio del Gargano, la città si trova tra due colline, Coppa Madonna e Castelluccio, tra il Monte Saraceno a sud e il Monte Sacro a nord, su un tratto di costa coperta da ulivi e circondata da boschi e dal mare.
Resti archeologici sul monte Saraceno, tra cui una necropoli con oltre 500 tombe, mostrano che l'area era abitata già nel VI secolo aC, dalla popolazione Dauni.
Mattinata era un piccolo villaggio per il commercio tra il popolo dei Dauni e i greci con il nome di Apeneste, divenne Matinum dopo la colonizzazione romana. Distrutto e abbandonato a causa di un forte terremoto e delle invasioni saracene, la zona iniziò ad essere popolata nel corso del XVI secolo da uomini di montagna che scesero a valle dalle colline circostanti. Fu una piccola faida appartenente all'Onore di Monte Sant'Angelo per diversi secoli e fu una delle mete preferite per i nobili di Manfredonia e Monte Sant'Angelo.
La visita al villaggio deve iniziare dal centro storico: il Rione Junno, l'antico cuore di Mattinata, conserva tracce delle prime abitazioni della città, che presenta diversi esempi di tipici edifici in pietra a secco del diciottesimo secolo chiamati pagghière ("pagliai"); seguita da una visita a numerosi edifici prestigiosi come Palazzo Mantuano, costruito nel 1840 e ora utilizzato come biblioteca comunale, e il maestoso palazzo Barretta o Palazzo Giordano, che risale all'inizio del XX secolo e oggi è sede del municipio.
Numerosi itinerari offrono paesaggi unici: le rovine dell'antica Abbazia Benedettina della Santissima Trinità sul Monte Sacro, la necropoli preromana sul Monte Saraceno, le gite in barca che permettono di raggiungere incantevoli baie e le numerose grotte marine - alcune delle quali ancora inesplorate.
Da non perdere, il Museo Civico che ospita innumerevoli reperti archeologici rinvenuti presso la vicina necropoli Dauniana sul Monte Saraceno e la Chiesa della Madonna della Luce.
Seguendo la costa verso Vieste, il Gargano rivela alcune delle sue più belle coste. I punti salienti includono la Baia di Vignanotica, con le sue spiagge di ciottoli e le grotte scavate nella roccia, e la Baia dei Faraglioni, con le sue acque trasparenti e le dune ricoperte di vegetazione.

I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!
Mattinata is a town in the province of Foggia, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. Located in the Gargano National Park and in the Gulf of Manfredonia, on the coast of the Gargano promontory, the town sits between two hills, Coppa Madonna and Castelluccio, between Monte Saraceno to the south and Monte Sacro to the north, on a stretch of coast covered by olive trees and surrounded by woods and the sea.
Archeological remains on Mount Saraceno, among them a necropolis with over 500 tombs, show that the area was inhabited already in the 6th century BC, by the Dauni population.
It was a small village for trade between the Daunian people and the Greeks with the name of Apeneste, it became Matinum after the Roman colonization. Destroyed and abandoned due to a strong earthquake and to Saracen invasions, the area began to be populated during the sixteenth century by mountain men who came down to the valley from the surrounding hills. It was a small feud belonging to the Honor of Monte Sant'Angelo for several centuries and was a favourite recreation location for the nobles of Manfredonia and Monte Sant'Angelo.
A visit to the town must begin from the historical centre: the Rione Junno, the ancient heart of Mattinata, retains traces of the town's earliest dwellings which features several examples of typical eighteenth century dry stone buildings called pagghiÈre ("haystacks"); followed by a visit to a number of prestigious buildings such as Palazzo Mantuano, built in 1840 and now used as the town library, and the stately Barretta palace or Palazzo Giordano, which dates back to the early twentieth century and today is the town hall.
A great many itineraries offer unique landscapes: the ancient Benedictine abbey of the Holy Trinity ruins on the Monte Sacro, the pre-Roman necropolis on the Monte Saraceno, the boat trips that allow to reach enchanting small bays and the many sea grottos - some of them still unexplored.
Not to be missed, the Civic Museum which accommodates countless archaeological finds unearthed at the nearby Daunian necropolis on Mount Saraceno and the Church of Our Lady of the Light.
Following the coast towards Vieste, the Gargano reveals some of its most beautiful shorelines. Highlights include the Bay of Vignanotica, with its pebbly beaches and caves dug into the rocks, and the Bay of the Faraglioni, with its transparent waters and dunes coated with vegetation.
Thing to see: The Historic Centre, the necropolis on Monte Saraceno, the Civic Museum, the Palazzo Mantuano, the Barretta Palace or Palazzo Giordano, the Church of Our Lady of the Light, the Benedictine abbey of the Holy Trinity.
