Ciao a tutti,
Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!
Galatone is a small town in the province of Lecce, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. It sits just inland from the Ionian Sea amidst vast olive groves and former feudal estates.
Galatone was an important centre during the Middle Ages when Greek language was still spoken and byzantine rites were celebrated.
Established as a Greek colony, the name derives from a Greek family. It has marks of the Byzantine empire and Baroque flashiness that the province of Lecce is known for.
There are some pretty sights in the historic center, which is surrounded by an expanding modern town. The monumental Porta di San Sebastiano is one of three historic gateways that allowed access into the city through the protective walls, this one in exuberant Neapolitan style boasting a carved lunette, the civic emblem emblazoned on it, and a guardian statue of the city's patron saint, Sebastian.
Galatone houses important historical and architectural monuments related to the Middle Ages; interesting monument in Galatone is the Sanctuary of the Holy Crucifix of Mercy, baroque church built from 1683 to 1694 by craftsmen from around the Salento. It boasts elaborate carvings, decorated side chapels, a beautiful organ, and an octagonal cupola studded with niches that are adorned with statues.
In the historical center we can admire monuments (mostly religious buildings) as the Mother Church, the Fulcignano Castle, the Chapel of San Peter and the convent of the Dominicans.
Built in 1591 on an existing building, the Mother Church in Galatone was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Flanked by a bell tower, the facade made of carparo stone is divided into three orders, while in the central area opens the main portal on which stands a lunette. The interior has a Latin cross shape, four chapels on each side, altars painted by Donato Antonio D'Orlando and an eighteenth-century copy of the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian, while on the main altar triumphs a seventeenth-century wooden Christ.
The Fulcignano Castle, built between the XII and XIV century by the Normans, is located on the southern outskirts of the town and belonged to the ancient village of Fulcignano, abandoned in the XV century. Now only remains the quadrilateral fortified walls made of limestone and about 8 metres high and 2,60 metres thick.
Religious celebrations, festivals and other celebrations take place throughout the year in Galatone. It also celebrates Carnival with parades, competitions of masks and floats.
Thing to see: The Historic Centre, the Sanctuary of the Holy Crucifix of Mercy, the Porta di San Sebastiano, the Mother Church, the Fulcignano Castle, the Chapel of San Peter, the convent of the Dominicans, the Church of Our Lady of Graces, the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Marquis Palace, the Church of Saint John Baptist, the Rocky Village of Tabelle, the Church of Saints Sebastian and Rocco.
