Bernalda è un borgo della provincia di Matera, nella regione italiana meridionale della Basilicata. Si trova all'estremità della Valle del Basento, in una posizione panoramica tra due fiumi, il Bradano e il Basento.
Questo centro ha origini medievali, ma il territorio in cui fu fondata Bernalda ospita insediamenti lucani e greci. I reperti archeologici hanno identificato un centro antico non troppo distante dall'abitato moderno.
Le sue origini risalgono alla presenza di una comunità di coloni greci in Basilicata, ma fu grazie all'arrivo della popolazione Dori nel 207 a.C. che fu fondato il primo centro urbano, chiamato Camarda. Camarda era un complesso agricolo, e per questo motivo godeva di una certa autonomia, abitata in gran parte da coloni e pastori e amministrata da potenti signori locali.
Una storia straordinariamente serena, fino al 1378, quando un violento terremoto distrusse completamente il borgo, che fu lentamente riportato in vita con l'arrivo degli Aragonesi.
Nel 1500, il re Alfonso II d'Aragona assegnò questo feudo al suo segretario, Bernardino de Bernardo, che ordinò la costruzione di un castello nello stesso punto dove sorgeva una torre normanna, che fu incorporata nella nuova struttura.
Bernardo si concentrò poi sulla protezione del borgo, circondandolo con un muro difensivo, completo di torri di avvistamento disposte a intervalli regolari attorno alla circonferenza e imponendo una pianta a griglia sul centro storico.
La Chiesa madre fu costruita nel XV secolo, chiamata "chiesa del convento", dedicata a San Bernardino da Siena, il santo patrono del borgo.
Il feudo fu poi venduto alla famiglia Navarreta nel 1609 e rimase suo fino alla fine dei diritti feudali sanciti dalla legge da Giuseppe Bonaparte nel 1806.
Il punto di partenza di una visita a Bernalda è Piazza Cavour, dove si può ammirare il maestoso Castello Aragonese risalente al XV secolo, posizionato di fronte alla Chiesa Madre dedicata a San Bernardino (XVI secolo). Da qui si può godere di un bellissimo panorama sulla Valle del Basento.
Il Convento di Sant'Antonio, sede del municipio, e l'antica chiesa di San Donato (XI-XII secolo) completano il quadro delle opere architettoniche di Bernalda.
I turisti visitano anche Bernalda per la sua vicinanza alla splendida Costa Jonica, dove possono godere di acque pulite e spiagge che sono state riconosciute dalla Bandiera Blu negli ultimi anni.
Il regista italo-americano Francis Ford Coppola è nato a Bernalda.

Bernalda is a town in the province of Matera, in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. It is located at the very end of the Valle del Basento, in a panoramic position between two rivers, the Bradano and Basento.
This centre has Medieval origins, but the territory where Bernalda was founded hosts Lucani and Greek settlements. Archaeological finds have identified an ancient centre not too distant from the modern habitation.
Its origins date back to the arrival of a community of Greek settlers in Basilicata, but it was upon the arrival of the Dori population in 207 B.C. that the first urban center was established, called Camarda. Camarda was an agricultural complex, and for this reason enjoyed a certain autonomy, inhabited for the most part by settlers and shepherds, and administered by powerful local lords.
A remarkably serene history, until 1378, when a violent earthquake completely destroyed the borgo, which was then slowly brought back to life with the arrival of the Aragons. In the 1500’s, King Alfonso II of Aragon assigned this fief to his secretary, Bernardino de Bernardo, who ordered the construction of a castle on the same spot as a Norman tower, which was incorporated into the new structure. Bernardo then focused on protecting the borgo, surrounding it with a defensive wall, complete with watchtowers placed at intervals around the circumference, and imposing a grid-like plan on the historical center. The mother church was also constructed in the fifteenth century, called the “convent church”, dedicated to San Bernardino da Siena, the patron saint of the borgo.
The fief was then sold to the Navarreta Family in 1609 and remained theirs until the end of feudal rights sanctioned by law by Giuseppe Bonaparte during 1806.
The nucleus of a visit to Bernalda is Piazza Cavour where one can admire the majestic Aragonese Castle dating back to the XV century, which is positioned in front of the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church) dedicated to San Bernardino (XVI century). From here one can enjoy a beautiful panorama over the Valle del Basento.
The Sant’Antonio Convent, seat of the town hall, and the ancient San Donato Church (XI-XII century) complete the picture of architectural works in Bernalda.
Tourists also visit Bernalda for its close proximity to the splendid Jonic Coast, where they can enjoy clean waters and beaches that have been recognised by the Bandiera Blue over the last few years.
The Italo-American film director Francis Ford Coppola was born in Bernalda.
Thing to see: the Historical centre, the Aragonese Castle, the Mother Church of San Bernardino, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, The Convent of St. Antonio from Padova, the Church of San Donato.

Bernalda looks like a very interesting place. I love how even the smallest places in Italy have a very long and illustrious history. Will keep Bernalda in mind when visiting Jonic Coast :)
