The Vortex Galaxy is one of the brightest galaxies in the sky: it is fairly bright enough to be observed even with a binoculars if the night is favorable, a small amateur telescope is enough to locate the smaller companion or to locate the only extension of the main galaxy. Is far from Earth from 15 to 37 million light years and is wide from 50,000 to 100,000 light years.
Astronomers hypothesize that the spiral form is mainly due to gravitational interactions with the smallest galaxy. The spiral drawn by the arms of the galaxy is a logarithmic spiral.
