I thought this Bush Cricket looked particularly interesting, almost like a hand written signature!
Larger on 500px
It's carnivorous and though it looks like a grasshopper it prefers to eat grasshoppers rather than grass.
The nasty looking spike at the end of the abdomen is an ovipositor used to place eggs into the soil; not a fearsome stinger. Typically they hunt at night and during the day, rest on branches and the like pretending to be leaves.
good shot
Thanks, it was posed perfectly, just in front of a light coloured patch of dirt!
They make the most interesting sounds.
Marita (Anybody can Cook)
Certainly do, though it can get a bit loud at night near the parks!
How detailed and beautiful is the insect world
Very beautiful indeed! I usually post macro photos so please take a look at some of my other posts!
Beautiful.
Thank you very much!
Didn't know there was a Green cricket able to kill and eat a grasshopper :O
Interesting
Yeah, most of these crickets are vegetarian but some groups are 100% carnivorous!
Then there's that group of caterpillars that eat meat in Hawaii, that's really bizarre too.
Interesting. I'm following you now :P
Great! Welcome aboard!
Good shot and pretty color combinations!
Thanks! The light, warm coloured background really sets of the green.
Good shot and pretty color combinations!
I had no idea those ate grasshoppers.
Some them do! Some bush crickets get quite large and would have no problem with a small or young grasshopper.
