The moss that sometimes grows on these barks is really like a mini-forest to the ants the highways of which run through it. Tree barks provide the soil for a variety of fungi and plants. It's a rich biosphere, nourishing animals the size of a lice up to birds like the woodpecker.

I just find it fascinating to watch nature at its smallest scale - sometimes it is equally impressive as our own world which we measure in meters and yards!
