Sago plants (Metroxylon sp) is one of the commodities of food that contains many carbohydrates, so sago is the staple food for some regions in Indonesia such as Maluku, Irian Jaya and part of Sulawesi. Sago can also be used as raw material for food industry.
This sago plant almost resembles a coconut tree that has a long leaves of greenish leaves and also has a brownish-colored stem with a length of 10-20 meters.
Sago grows in the form of clumps. Each clump consists of 1-8 stems of sago, at each base grows 5-7 stems of seedlings. In the wild conditions the clumps of sago will widen with large number of tillers in various growth rates.
Sago stalk is the most important part because it is a storage warehouse of aci or carbohydrates that the scope of its use in the industry is very broad, such as food industry, feed, alcohol and various other industries. Sago-shaped sago stems are high from the surface of the soil until the base of the flower ranges from 10-15 meters, with the diameter of the stem on the bottom can reach 35 to 50 cm, bahakan can reach 80 to 90 cm. Generally the diameter of the lower stem is somewhat larger than the top, and the lower stem generally accommodates the starch higher than the top.
