Bandicoot / Quenda

I've been trying to photograph the Bandicoot / Quenda that I've seen around the farm we live on for over a year now. They are mostly nocturnal and can be quite shy if they aren't used to people being around, which has made it quite the challenge to get good photos of them.

I was about to go for a walk to the mail box this afternoon when I spotted the bandicoot drinking from one of the water troughs we leave out for native wildlife and birds. I quickly got my camera together and started taking photos.

Over the space of about 1.5 hours I was able to make my way closer to where it was foraging for food. I then sat dead still for close to an hour as it wandered into the yard. It either didn't realise I was there, or it felt pretty safe because at one point it got within 40cms (15 inches) of me, I know it was that close because my lens won't focus closer than that and it wouldn't focus for those photos.

We have a few other native species that I'm still working on photographing properly, some of them are also nocturnal, all of them are quite skittish! The two main ones I'm trying to photograph are the Phascogale and Antechinus.
