So much attention is paid to butterfly wings, not without reason. But that's not all there is to these beautiful creatures. I took these shots to get their faces: their big bug eyes, furry hair, and proboscises. Click any image for the high resolution version to see them up even closer.

Fleeting glimpses of summer are always welcome even if Autumn has arrived. Love the vantage point and composition of the 3rd image! Okay this might motivate me to post some shots from the local botanical garden I took last week.
Thanks. It looks like a plane from that angle right? I'm reminded of a B-52.
yep! plus most pix of butterflies seem to be at some off angle unless they have a pin in them.
Very nice photography, excellent features that has captured this beautiful insect. Thank you so much
Thanks and you're welcome :)
Great stuff! Love all your macro work :)
Thanks MovieVertigo!
Beautiful. The top one is my favourite because of the pattern on the eyes. I've never seen that before.
Their eye coloration is pretty cool. It throws me off when looking at the photos in Lightroom because its diffuseness looks like it's out of focus but that's just how they are. I wonder if there's any functionality to it with eyesight, like are the lighter areas better for low-light vision?
Not sure. It looks like they have compound eyes like other insects but you may well be right it may be a special adaptation for certain conditions. The other thing is it could be some kind of camouflage if predators use their eyes as a means to identify them. If you look at all the other butterflies they don't seem to have the colouration and their eyes look more plain so it must confer some kind of survival advantage in this case.
Why I wasn't following you already?
Now I do, beautiful shots! :)
Thanks and thanks for the follow!
Love that last one. You get some great shots of these and such a variety of butterflies!
Thank you!

Gorgeous photos mate:)
Thank you :)
nice photo. good capture.
Thank you much :)
I was wondering what that curly tongue thing was until you mentioned
proboscises which is an elongated sucking mouthpart that is typically tubular and flexible.
I can't get enough of your photos, Pfunk. Especially when I get to Zoom In
Yeah I almost forgot to do the high-res ones. I don't do that for all my posts but for this one it's really cool to zoom into the focused bits and see all the detail. I meticulously zoom and select the best-focused shots at full-res in Lightroom, so I may as well make it count ;)
Thank you for your compliment
I love this! I was such a bug obsessed kid! Caterpillars, lady bugs, bumble bees and butterflies, too me they were just like furry kittens just with more legs.
Haha that's cute. I was the terrible kid with a magnifying glass chasing down ants.
Hahaha.... Nooooo you were the bully on my block 😋
Those are like airplanes!
Cool huh?

My goodness! The eyes seem to match their wings. Fascinating. :)
I think @thecryptofiend is right in his comment above, it's probably part of their camo.
Fantastic photos, these beautiful creatures are so delicate and fragile but look so different close up,
Thanks Karen :)
Love that the first one has patterned eyes perfectly matching his wings — never seen that before! Very nice work!
Thank you!
