A whole lot of Canadians have Ukrainian heritage, especially those from the Prairies, myself included. Freeland is nothing special for that. Although her heritage isn't exactly from the populace of the Ukraine and is a little concerning. That said we should not be judged by our heritage, but our deeds; so now we worry that with Freeland the apple does not fall far from the tyrannical tree, given her recent behaviour to limit democracy and human rights and collaborate with corporations and those that own corporations to enhance their power and profits.
It is toss up outside of the 30 percent that still buy the propaganda who is more disliked, her or Trudeau.
Like you said, the government is pro protests if the protest supports their agenda. If it doesn't regardless of the diversity, peace, and message of the protest, protestors will be portrayed as racist and/or looking to overthrow the government. Apparently calling for a change in non-democratic, human rights violating mandates and/ or calling for a new election are seen as acts of insurrection now.
There are a few righteous individuals in high level government. But I can think of one; she spoke out before it was popular, Dr. Leslyn Lewis. She is amazing.

Though it does appear at least parts of the media are waking up and realizing the harm done and mistakes made while we were sleeping.

For some reason this got me thinking about the Borg suffering zombie-ism (?). The thought amuses.
I know I distract from what you have to say, but sometimes all one has left is humour. And thoughts of zombies.
