The Paper Nautilus

These paper nautiluses are paper-thin egg casings that the females octopuses secrete. It's used as a brood chamber and for trapped surface air to maintain it's buoyancy. Speculation had it that argonauts did not produce their own egg cases but borrowed them from other organisms, similar to what hermit crabs did. However today we know this not to be true.

I found these nautilus shells in Arniston/Waenhuiskrans and placed them on a beach in Hermanus for a photo session.
