Rust & Gold: The Brown City of Ibadan

in #photography3 years ago

It was quite a tussle deciding what my next post (this post) would be. Photography or Poetry. Well, the mental struggle ended with photography taking the lead.

Soooo here we go, images from one of my favourite cities yet - Ibadan.

Ibadan is the capital of Oyo State and the largest city by geographic area in Nigeria. With a population of over 3 million persons [as of 2021], it claims it's place as the 3rd largest city by population in Nigeria after Lagos and Kano.

Ibadan is popularly referred to as "The Brown City", a title it has undisputably earned - all thanks to the cluster of rusty zinc roofs crowning many ancient buildings and the dusty atmosphere in most parts.

How did I get here? Service to my Fatherland brought me here. NYSC did their thing and boom. The rest, they say, is history.

First thing that caught my attention was the relatively calm and peaceful aura, different from the ever-bustling Lagos, where I was born and bred.
Plus, the easy going and welcoming people, the relatively cheap cost of living and precious friendships I made, captured my heart and made me even want to extend my stay (which I eventually did).

And there's more to Ibadan then just dust and brown roofs - have you tried the amala and abula from Amala Skye? An after-dark drive through Bodija? Visits to the art galleries in Mokola and chill spots in Ring Road/Challenge? 🥺

This ancient city is dear to me for one too many reasons, which you'll know more of in the due course of time.

Stick around as I'll be sharing more works and photographs, documenting my sojourn in this peaceful part of God's Green Earth.

Till then, enjoy this view and be safe!

And oh, Happy New Month. ❤️
