Pruning grapes in the snow

in #photography6 years ago

Today I was pruning our grape vines. It was snowy and cold. I had 2 sets of foot warmers in and my feet were still cold. I got 3/4 of a row finished before calling it quits for the day. Hope you had a great day today.

What wine region you live in? And what type of grape is this?"

I live in the finger lakes wine region. Specifically Seneca Lake. These are Cayuga White, they are a Cornell University hybrid developed about 30 miles north of us.

Oh nice. I still have yet to try ice wine. I hear the resiling is amazing there! I live in Monterey county in California. We have some sub regions that produce some of the best Pinot noir. A few vineyards that can rival the best of Burgandy

We grow amazing Riesling here! Pinot noir and Cab franc grow relatively well here as well. The other reds are hit or miss depending on the year. Its still a little warm for ice wine. State law says 24 hours at 17° before we can call it ice wine.

Interesting. One day I will seek out a bottle. Unfortunately I am in a long break from drinking. Does ice wine age well?

Ice wine can age well if stored properly or it can oxidize and taste like funky carmel.

Funky caramel actually sounds good! Haha I had a bottle of 1991 Chardonnay from Napa last year. I opened it for my girls birthday since she was born in 91. I thought for sure this wine would not be drinkable. This wine smelt like funky butterscotch candy and tasted of caramel! The color was almost like honey. I really couldn’t believe it. It will be forever remembered

Is it best to prune now or wait till late winter?

Depends on the type of grape and how many acres you have to prune.
