Udaipur is one of the jewels of Rajasthan . Lakes, palaces and havelis are the recipe for success. A fantastic place to stop for a few days and imbue the spirit of India. The city is very cohesive and homogenous, with magnificent cafés and terraces, good restaurants and an ideal base for touring some of Rajasthan's jewels. These are the must-see and not to be missed places in Udaipur.

Contemplate Lake Pichola

Lake Pichola is the water mirror of the city, where in its waters reflect the images of the various palaces and havelis that fill the banks and islands of the lake. There are many rides you can do to see the lake, especially along its shores.

Take a boat trip on Lake Pichola

Although you can explore the shores of the lake on foot, one of the most wonderful ways to get to know it is to embark on a boat trip. The walks leave throughout the day and allow to contemplate the Palace of the Lake, the Jag Niwas, and the Jag Mandir, the two palaces built on islands in the lake. The latter's gardens can be visited on the boat trip from the City Palace.

Stay at the Lake Palace

The magnificent and incredibly romantic Lake Palace is known as Jag Niwas and is situated in the middle of Lake Pichola. The palace is a maximum symbols of the opulence and wealth of the Maharajas. Today you can not visit the palace since it is a hotel belonging to the Taj group. To be able to contemplate this jewel of Rajasthan you will have to book a night at the hotel, something that requires an increased budget since it costs around 400 € / night (not for everyone but certainly for some).

Meet Haveli Baghore ki

This is one of the best preserved havelis of Udaipur and Rajasthan. Its interior has several exhibitions on the culture of Rajasthan, namely a fabulous puppet show. The haveli is wonderful with beautiful views over the lake. There is also an exhibition about Indian wedding which is very interesting to understand how the traditional wedding in Rajasthan works.

Watch a puppet show and dance in Rajasthan

Haveli Baghore ki has one of the most beautiful puppet shows and dances in Rajasthan. The show is daily and starts at 6:30 p.m. It costs 150 rupees / person. Go early to get a place well ahead as it is probably the best show you will see in Rajasthan and India.

Sleep in a beautiful haveli in Rajasthan

Udaipur is probably the best city in Rajasthan to feel like a true Maharaja, since you can stay in what for us was the best hotel in India , a traditional old haveli, reclaimed and overlooking the lake and the palaces of the city and feel inside a romantic setting every day. The rooms are well-kept and cost between € 30 / night (no view on the lake) or € 50 / person (overlooking the lake). If you are looking for romantic accommodation and a magical place to share the moment with your half-dozen, the Haveli Jagat Niwas is the ideal place.

Ranakpur, just over 100 km from Udaipur, has one of the most beautiful Jain temples in India. It is possible to visit the temple one day and it is a beautiful tour. Almost all hotels will arrange a taxi with a driver, but if you want you can buy the trip at one of the many local agencies in the city. Getting there by public transport is more complicated.

Chittogarh is about 2 hours by bus from Udaipur, which makes this city a great place for a day trip. Chittogarh is a walled and imposing city.
