Its time for another episode of Read Between The Wines - Anything and everything book related and maybe a little bit of wine as well!
Well if you read my last episode of the View you would know that Funko Pops will fast become my next obsession. And in fact okay I went out today and started my collection. Now I will justify this with the fact they they really are props for my growing book blog. And after spending some time on Instagram I realise I needed to step up my book photography
This just isn't going to cut it in the competitive universe of book blogging.
So I started playing around with little trinkets I had in the house and the bookshelf and it got marginally better.
But the bookstagram community is a pretty big one and there are some amazing profiles out there. Most bloggers start by using the bookstagram hashtag as a way to drive traffic to their websites - but its really evolved into a great place to find reviews, recommendations and conversations about books.
Obviously IG is a very visual platform so it's kind of important to have eye-catching photos. I'm always up for a shopping trip so this morning I decided to check out the dollar shops and see what props I could dig up... things like fairy lights, flowers, material and candles.
I didn't want to spend too much money and I also wanted to be able to take the photos with my smart phone and up load straight to IG without mucking around too much with my DSLR, lighting and photoshop.
The dollar shops are a great place to go and they generally seem to have a craft section as well. Scrap-booking paper makes great backgrounds.. and I was lucky to find a decorative piece of timber board that will make a perfect base. I ended up with quite a haul and under $50.
I did also however find a collectibles shop.. and they literally had hundreds of Funko Pops calling to me from the vast wall they covered!
So in the tradition of Bookstagram I've taken a "Shelfie". Spot the Funko Pops from some of my favourite fantasy stories.
I've been playing around this afternoon and I can tell you that a few props make all the difference. I'm pretty happy with how my photos for bookstagram have developed from the first Matthew Reilly book a couple of days ago, to my latest efforts this morning.
All photos were shot on a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and edited on the phone using an App called Camera 360.
So know I have a myriad of books I can't wait to get down off the shelf and start playing around with some creative photography - practice makes perfect!

Bookstagram. Book blogging. I'm laughing pretty hard about the fact that I had no idea this stuff was a thing and yet I am completely unsurprised that this is a thing XD That's kinda cool. Your photos are looking pretty pro, the later ones are better than the first ones but the first ones weren't bad either :)

I never expected to find another "bookstagram" community here but I really have to try (for the love of books and phography). And so I went and seached for it and lo and behold, it's your post that was on top of the search bar and I have to say that it deserves to be there. I'm happy to find someone who reacted the way that I did when I realized how much props improve the quality and total vibe of book photos. I too rummaged around the house for trinkets and even went out to buy plastic flowers and fairy lights. 😂
