How I got the shot #8

How I got the shot #8

This is another angle that certainly involved getting low, fortunately it was on a nice day, so I didn't get too dirty for this one! It was a combination of techniques I'll explain below designed to emphasise depth and the tilt shift effect I was using. I particularly love using this lens for exactly this reason so whenever we are exploring with a couple I'll look out for somewhere to employ the technique. I've often used low hanging branches and blossoms to illicit the same effect but sometimes you just have to get creative!

Struggling to find anything to use in the form of branches and blossoms I asked the couple if they'd mind lying down in the flowers, I probably wouldn't ask someone to do this on a wedding day but again, engagement shoots allow that bit of extra freedom to ask the couple to do more interesting things!

I was using an adapted lens that I'll talk about in a future article to create a tilt shift effect in camera. Similar effects can be done in post, in fact a few years back Instagram even introduced a similar feature, the problem is that this is an effect that can never be properly replicated. It places foreground, background and mid objects in focus, while placing other areas out of focus. The post production tilts can always blur out elements, but they can't recreate the in focus foreground and background elements unless you've been able to shoot at a really narrow aperture (f11+)

Getting low really helped to bring the flowers all around the couple into the frame and get the look I was going for!

Remember, get creative with your angles!

Love the shot. Great B&W post processing!

Sometimes when I get low for those kind of shots, I lay myself down on my reflector (black side down of course!). Helps keep the soil off!

Excellent advice! Thank you. I never wanted to use them exactly for the reason and you just gave me the solution!

Haha good call! To be honest I rarely have a reflector big enough to hand, plus it makes the couples chuckle to see me absolutely covered in mud, water, grime and - every so often when I'm really lucky - dog shit!
