Aerial Photography From A Moving Airplane While Piloting Is Not Easy

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

Shooting still photography from a moving airplane while you are also piloting it is not easy.

There are many things to consider when flying, especially when flying in rugged remote back country wilderness.

Because I am usually camping alone when on these explorations I bring all my gear, food and emergency supplies along with protection from the wild critters (4 legged and 2 legged!) and my camera gear.

Aside for all the aforementioned gear I also carry enough emergency supplies to last a couple of weeks if I have to make an unforeseen forced landing in the wild lands.

Always when flying your head is on a swivel, constantly scanning the horizon all the way around to make certain there are no other objects in the air with me that could cause problems via collision. Airplanes, descending weather balloons that have run out of gas but still have a 40lb equipment package, flocks or birds and even single birds can cause serious problems if they collide with the plane.

What you are seeing with images like the screenshot above (from one of my wing mounted cameras) are very small moments in time when I put the camera to my eye, quickly adjust focus and snap the shot. This takes a few seconds at best and even during this time I am still looking around for anything that could be a problem.

The last thing to consider is a game most pilots engage in called “I can land there”. All the time, almost subconsciously, I look at areas around me that I could land on in the event of an emergency.

My type of photography is not easy to do, it is not like I can simply pull over and park then take the picture, nor can other folks climb the trail and shoot the same shot again, this allows me to capture truly unique one-of-a-kind images.

I hope you enjoy these views! I feel this expands the visual lexicon that we use to describe our world.

Yehaw!

What is your main appeal to camping by yourself if I may ask? Out of sheer curiosity!

Serenity and solitude... it is nice being in the wilds alone. The sounds are tranquil and I find it quite relaxing. It is especially nice flying into a very remote area that is difficult to drive into so that I am far away from civilization. It just feels right to me.

Mmm I hear you. For the same reason I often go into the woods and blaze my own trail, for the sake of being alone, in nature. Only nature is humankind's natural habitat.

Pretty impressive... sounds to me a bit like driving in reverse on a twisted road at night while texting your wife. Amazing that you can do it!

Tell us the truth, you saw an UFO, and you wanted to take a blurry image of it! (Great scenery btw, and aerial pics are great, and something that you can put on the wall without looking twice! All the best!)

deadly but great

It seems a very risky photograph, but it is precisely that and the landscapes that makes them worthy of this kind of photographs.

So risky yet soo amazing and wonderful <3

Easy lol just engage autopilot then climb out on the wing and take a 360 ~ make sure your wearing a parachute and your plane insurance is paid in full... Nicely Done! You timed it just right with the Sun and the Mountains...

Look mom, no hands!

It really is thrilling i had an opportunity to do aerial photography once, one of the best gigs i ever had just for the experience and perpsective.

Hi :) That's a great view there :) you can also try to check this out. https://steemit.com/@akilie1029

I like your shots. Not many people are in position to take them, that's what makes you to stand out even more. But i really did not imagine that it is so hard. You've pointed out so many things that you need to keep on your mind constantly, i believe many people do not realize what it takes to snap a shot or two from a plane cabin. Neither did i. Until now.

How are you not freezing with that window open? Great picture and educated me about planes as always!

Hey Maxy, I have a heat vent that pulls hot air from a manifold system under the engine and funnels it into the cockpit. This is underneath the instrument panel so it keeps my legs pretty warm, then I dress appropriately for the weather conditions. When I am not shooting I pull the window shut.

Ah that makes sense, I guess it keeps you comfortable while flying!

I like your photography! I'm now following, if you'd like to follow back.

You are the real flying cowboy ;-)

DAMNNNNNNNNNN

I think what you do is pretty awesome. It brings aerial photography to a whole new level. I would love an adventure like this.
