I was wandering around Kolob Terrace along the edge of Zion National Park and lensed these images of an area known as the Red Butte Wilderness in the flat known as the Grapevine Wash. This is a stark and beautifully desolate place with bare formations of red Navajo Sandstone everywhere.
The first image below is of a very strange rock formation that lays between the Firepit Knoll and Spendlove Knoll Volcanic Cinder Pits. This is a small formation that is unusual for its otherworldly twisted columns of eroded rock that adorn the top of the domed structure.
Please open the images full screen to see the details of these odd formations. This is a dome structure that is common to the Zion area, but the really interesting structures are those spire-like rocks that have been eroded over time by wind and rain.
To get a sense of the size of the area I created the panoramic image below. Click on the image to open a full size panoramic and scroll around to see the full image.
I lensed these images at different times while exploring this awe-inspiring wilderness area for my ongoing project, "Where Eagles Fly". This is Part I of a 4 part series about this location. Stay tuned to the next 3 posts to get the full story and watch a film made while flying in the area.
About The Project
Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition is my personal mission to introduce people to these amazing locations that surround us. I am piloting a bush plane while exploring and filming throughout the remote back-country areas of North America to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.
