1770 - Queenslands Hidden Gem

in #photography7 years ago

Seventeen Seventy, also known as 1770, is a small Queensland town in the Gladstone Region. It is situated on the peninsula surrounded by the Coral Sea and Bustard Bay on three sides – it is part of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

The town was originally named Round Hill, after the creek it sits on, but was changed in 1970 to reflect the history of the town. This was the second landing site of Captain James cook and the crew of the Endeavour in 1770.

1770 is a sleepy quiet town yet an incredible place to visit with wildlife, estuaries, national parks and rainforests. There are a number of activities to try from surfing, taking in views from local lookouts, to 4wd adventures, follow the Butterfly walk, visit the local distillery, visit Horizons Kangaroo Sanctuary, explore Deepwater National Park, go fishing, Kayak around Agnes Waters, learn about indigenous culture, or take a cruise over to Lady Musgrave Island – one of the most beautiful coral cays on the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

1770 is famous for it’s spectacular sunsets and is one of the few places in Queensland you can watch the sun set over the water. Our journey to 1770 was done with the caravan in tow - parking it just a couple of meters from the waters edge. This camping site was truly the closest to the water we have camped. We could put the deck chairs on the waters edge and relax while watching the sunset. The photographs below show just how amazing these sunsets can be. Enjoy.
