Morning Everyone and Happy Sunday!
I'm REDONKULOUSLY excited to share some photography I recently took on my vacation to Iceland this past month. My bestie and I were there for 10 days and we drove around the entire island. The people of Iceland should fire their marketing team and rename their island "HolycraplookatthatLand" because almost every hour there was some new breathtaking vista, majestic piece of rugged beauty, or mindblowing natural geographical feature.
The Actual Ice in Iceland
Something like 40% of Iceland is covered by glaciers.
When they glacier flows down to the sea you get some very beautiful (very blue) iceburgs that break off and make the most beautiful natural ice sculptures. The colour has to do with ice crystals that form in the densely packed snow. Look for the little black dot amidst the iceburgs. That was a seal flopping around looking for fish!
Mountains, Gandalf, Mountains!
Iceland sits between the North Amercian and Eurasian tectonic plates - its a very young island. That makes it very rough and majestic. Mountains dominates the central and western portions of the island.
Ready for a Fall?
With all those rugged mountains and fresh rain coming off the North Atlantic of course there were many mindblowingly gorgeous waterfalls! This is Dettifoss - the massively powerful falls featured in the opening scene of Scott Ridley's Prometheus:
The area of the North where Dettifoss is a vast national park with thousands of square miles of blasted nothing, and in the middle of it the most gorgeous canyon carved by the river that makes up Dettifoss.
Here's a picture of Skogafoss and Godafoss as well! We were calling Skogafoss "BigGayFalls" on account of all the beautiful rainbows emanating from it :-)
Me and my Bestie!
More to come tomorrow! Here's me and my bestie hanging out under some of those gorgeous rainbows! More to come tomorrow in Part 2... when we show you the darker side of Iceland... hell on earth and abandoned yet eerily beautiful farm left to rot!
Thanks for sharing. Will keep a lookout on your next post. :)
Iceland ... :O
So, not all iceland lands are covered with ice?
i've been though that iceland is 100% covered with ice :D haha..
Ironically Greenland is much icier than Iceland! It has to do with the gulfstream... all that warm water from the south keeps it relatively warm.. for being just a few kilometers south of the arctic circle!
