Lately I have been fascinated about all the bees around my garden so I started to photograph these busy bees with my new macro lens and I discovered these massive sacks on the back of their knees!
So I did some research and found out a lot of cool information about these little guys! So here are some facts and some pictures I took during the week =).
A honey bee worker only produces about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in it's lifetime!
For the honey bees, It's all about numbers. From spring to Autumn, the worker bees must make around 60 lbs. of honey to sustain the entire colony during the winter.
It takes thousands of working bees to get the job done.
The only male honey bees die immediately after mating, they are called Drones.
The male honey bees serve only one purpose.... They provide their sperm to the queen.
About 6 days after emerging from their cells, the drones are ready to mate. Once they've fulfilled that purpose, they die.
Honey Bees can fly at speeds of up to 15mph!
That might seem fast but they are actually one of the slower flying insects.
Honey bees are built for small trips from flower to flower, not for long distance. Their little wings must flap about 11,000 times per minute just to keep their pollen-laden bodies aloft for the flight back home.
We can't live without Bees!!!!
The reason for this is there are an estimated 20,000 species of bees on this planet. Let's just pretend that we wake up tomorrow and all the bees have left planet earth or died...
Humanity would last 4 years without them 😱
So I thank you Honey bees for being the only insect in the world that produces food for us and for keeping busy day in day out so we can roam this beautiful planet 🙌
