Why Buy a DSLR?

So your thinking of investing in a new digital SLR camera. That’s fantastic!! But where do you start looking? There are so many options available and they all have different price ranges. The average person who doesn’t know anything about photography, would be lost in all these choices.

Luckily I have taken the time to design this guide to help you answer that question. Hopefully after you have finished reading this guide, you will have a better understanding on what to look out for when going through the decision making process of buying a new camera.

Before going any further we should answer the question why anyone would want to buy a DSLR in the first place. They are a lot bigger and heavier than a point and shoot camera, they are generally more expensive on the bank account. The answer to that question is that a Digital SLR gives the photographer superior versatility and image quality.

The versatility is that it can accommodate different types of accessories such as lens and flash units. A conventional point and shoot camera, is limited to its basic fixed lens and flash. With a DSLR you can choose the type of lens you can attach to your camera, which in turn gives it more usability out in the world. Versatility also comes in the form of more control over the picture taking process. For those creative people out there, a DSLR comes with manual settings and features that gives the control back to the user.

The improved image quality comes from the fact that it gives the photographer the option to use higher grade lenses for your camera – as opposed to the majority of cheap materials that are used in the point and shoot cameras. Even the cheapest DSLR lenses can out-perform the most expensive point and shoot in terms of image quality. The image quality is also attributed to the physically larger sensor size in the camera. the average size of a sensor in a point and shoot is no bigger than a Australian 5 cent coin – whereas the sensor size of a DSLR can be as big as 35mm across the diagonal dimension.

What do you need?

In today’s market there are so many different DSLR to choose from and all of them vary in purpose and price. There are trade-offs and Pluses in every DSLR. The key is to find out which one best suits you!!

In order to determine which one will be suit your needs, you are going to have to pre-determine what type of photos your are going to take?

Some examples of different type of photos are animals, scenery, people, parties, sports, art, products, the list of things to photograph is infinite. Most of the time its going to be at least 2 of these things, but your goal is to choose the one or two that you are planning to photograph most of the time.

When you make those decisions, I want you to think of those subjects in an objective way in terms of:

Distance you need to be when taking the photograph
The speed at which the subject is moving
The light levels of the environment that your shooting in
The amount of travelling and moving around that you need to do to get to your subject

By answering the above question, you are already starting to specify your needs. If you plan on taking images that are require you to move around a lot, like photographing people or events. Then your going to want a camera that is fairly light and portable. If you are planning to photograph field sports or wildlife – where its not practical to be very close to your subject then your going to want something that is durable and has a long zoom – so you can get pictures of subjects from a safe distance away.

Thank you for your attention to my blog!

I agree about the importance of a larger sensor, manual controls, and interchangeable lenses, but DSLRs are not the only option. Some of the new mirrorless cameras produce DSLR quality images in a smaller package. My old Nikon DSLR setup has served me well, but I am now looking to replace it with a much smaller Sony or Fuji mirrorless. For now, there are still tradeoffs, but I think mirrorless is the future and pentaprism cameras will eventually go the way of the dinosaur.

I like your opinion! Next year I want to try Fuji functional from this series!

valuable suggestion.
can i know about the camera you are using?

Thanks) I'm using the Canon EOS 5D Mark for my work and the Olympus E-520 for entertainment)
