We all utilize zoom on both our digital SLRs and compact digital cameras –especially when we’re sitting in the nosebleeds at a concert…or stalking people. Whichever you prefer. But those not completely photography savvy probably don’t know there is a big difference between optical and digital zoom. Or that it either even exist. Camera zooms were not all created equal!
Bottom line: optical zoom is way better than digital. Here’s why. Digital zoom is, in fact, not really zoom at all. What’s it’s actually doing is enlarging a portion of the image. It’s really just simulating optical zoom, which actually brings the subject closer. When you use digital zoom, you’re actually losing image quality. If your compact digital cameras do not offer optical zoom, you always have the option of using photo editing software to save the image. It won’t look quite as spectacular, but it’s a start. When shopping for a new camera, ensure that it will allow you to disable the digital zoom. Only use digital zoom when you know it will not impact the image quality, i.e. when you’re not that far away from your subject.

Sometimes these details look silly, but they make an immense difference in the final composition of the photograph. For us laymen, these differences are neither understood nor studied, but I imagine that in a course of photography these details are taught continuously so that they improve the acumen of the autograph when giving the shoot and capture an excellent image that can be marked forever in the memory of several people.
