Sky Lanterns yes or no?

in #photography7 years ago

I have mixed feelings about these sky Lanterns

I went to the local Beach tonight to get some steps in for my exercise, but of course I had my camera with me as I almost always do.

and I saw this group on the beach from a distance and wondered what the white things they had were so I had to be nosy and get closer and have a look.

As you ca see it was a wedding party and they had a lot of those Sky Lantern things that you let light up and float away in the wind.

they weren't having a lot of success as the wind was a good breeze and blowing in from the ocean and not out over the water as I would imagine that they were hoping for so some, got behind the life guard tower to try and light some

They did have success with getting two to fly that I saw, but they floated with the wind away from the beach and over the Gulf Pond and peoples property. now the grass around the pond isn't very dry but some spots look quite dry and some people properties may have some dry bush so I personally was glad when they realized this wasn't working as well as they hoped and most of the wedding party left complete with the balloons.

Now I do feel sorry for the wedding couple that one of their plans didn't work as they hoped, but I am glad more didn't float over the ponds, for two reasons, I know the chance of them starting a fire is most likely small but its still a chance, and secondly I have heard of stories where the lanterns have landed in water of open areas and fish and birds have got tangled in them.

SO although they do look very pretty especially when it is after the sun has set and they glow in the dark I am not sure I am a fan of them at all.

Just curious what are your thoughts on the use of Sky Lanterns

I have mixed feelings about these lanterns too, they do look beautiful and I think are a nice this to do as a group for a shared experience, however about three weeks ago driving down the motorway with my mum to London we saw one blow right onto the road ahead of us. 😕 Thankfully it didn't cause us any problem but that does seem a bit hazardous. My parents live in Cambridgeshire surrounded my countryside and they had just harvested the wheat. Imagine one of these flew too close to a barn that would be a disaster.

YEs I think we are in Synch that is my concern as well, for the most part I am sure nothing will happen but in the wrong time at the wrong place could be a disaster

My neighbor was doing them. Of course they blew in from the water not out and fly right over the other neighbors house to who knows where. Not good in dry conditions for sure.

Yes thats my worry when people let them off when its dry then they are really dangerous

I thought they were made with a feature to make it unlikely to cause fire...but still...i get what you're saying.

Maybe they are which would be a good thing, but I did see one maybe a year ago that the whole lantern went up in flames so maybe mare and some arent

They are pretty, but we set some off during Independence Day and they floated right over our woods! July is a hot, dry season for most of the US. I don't think they're a good idea at all and I can see how they would quickly be outlawed.

Thanks for your visit and thoughts, and I agree in dry conditions they can be potentially so dangerous

We see them on the beach here too. As long as the blow towards the ocean, not too much of a problem. But the wind is not cooperating we have a bigger problem There are a lot of very dry palm leaf roofs here and fire is a very real danager.

Yes out to sea is probably fine, but when its dry going anywhere else could be so dangerous

Especially when our nearest fire station is 25 miles away...

Ohh Hell yes absolutely in that case

Never knew they caused those issues. I think it would be good to find other options if they do really find all the issues.

Excellent post buddy. Love the lanterns a lot. In india people tie lanterns on their kites and fly them at night. It is the lanterns who act as the guide in kite flying. They look so very beautiful and a sight to adore for sure. But on tbe flip side, i agree with u that one needs to be careful as if they get onto dry grass, it cpuld cause significant damage. Upvoted and following u.

Thanks KIndly, thats such a cool idea tying them to kits both for the flying and looks but also because you then control where they go

Living in a place that is prone to fires, I would definitely have my doubts about them, though they look pretty.

They do look so pretty without a doubt but personally I think there should be some more control of them, I heard in Australia they are banned

im pretty sure where i live you need a permit and someone to supervise who, when weather conditions change, will cancel the event. there is a lot of risk in those pretty little lanterns.

I think personally that makes a lot of sense and would like to see similar rules here

Sky lanterns are banned in Australia because of the risk of causing an uncontrolled fire. Even though most of them are biodegardable, they are still a pollutant, and whoever sends them up most likely won't go after it and throw it away when it does eventually land. Perhaps just the wedding couple could send one up for its symbolism, but not the whole group.

I think banning them or very tight controls make a lot of sense,

I also agree for a symbol the couple sending up a heart shaped one makes sense not so much the whole party sending them up

sky lanterns look lovely but i often wonder if they are eco-friendly or not.

Yes I think the same, I did find one washed up on a beach once so not sure how eco friendly they are

See that's what I had in mind. That's why I haven't bought any yet although I love how they light up the sky. I am the person who always keeps an extra bag in her handbag to put in any wrappers or unwanted rubbish instead of throwing it on the road if there's no dustbin nearby and if I forget to carry an extra bag, the rubbish adorns my handbag lol but never on the road.

I am the same I always have a plastic bag I my camera bag for my beach walks if I see trash I pick it up into the bag so to keep the beach clean

Oh fantastic! Good to have found you then. Someone who shares passion for saving the environment. @ecotrain is a great place for such people and @eco-alex is doing a great job improving the environment too :)

I will check them out thanks

I feel the same... they do look pretty, but not worth the trouble they can cause! There many other ways to celebrate... Love your shots of the crowd on the beach though... :)

Thanks, and yes I am thinking more and more they need to be controlled better here
