Introduction
I had an appointment in Newcastle today and with it being a beautiful bright day which also had some lovely clouds I decided to take a detour to one of my favourite photography subjects - The Angel of the North.
I decided to use my IR converted Nikon D7100 as I haven't yet got any shots with good clouds.
I used my usual conversion process, although I found I actually preferred these shots without the red/blue channel swapping.
Due to the time it takes to process these I have only processed a few of them. If people really like these I can do more.

very like! beautiful Colour!
Thank you:)
If possible, could you post an article about how exactly you converted your camera setup to do IR photography, and how you do the post-processing? I'd love to read it, been dying to experiment with IR photography for ages!
I didn't convert it myself. I got it done through a camera service. If you are in the US you can use LifePixel:
https://www.lifepixel.com/
They also explain the basic process here:
https://www.lifepixel.com/infrared-faq
Processing is covered here: https://www.lifepixel.com/tutorials
Much appreciated! Awesome stuff, had never heard of lifepixel!
UK based currently myself, and into doing stuff myself as opposed to paying a pro.
They have a tutorial for the Nikon D80 I'm familiar with, and which seems to go for less than £100 on eBay... Might pick one up in the coming months once I have a few quid spare and have a go, taking pictures of the process with the other camera :D
Cool didn't realise you were in the UK. If you aren't confident yourself these guys can do it for you here - they were recommended to me by a few people:

i think 8 is my favorite :D, looks magical, nice color work
Thanks:)
They look great! The Angel is my next subject I'm going to photograph! Just a quick hop over the Tyne on my bike :)
Let me know when you do! It is such a great subject and today there were lots of people there with their cameras because it was bright but also cloudy so it makes for really intense skies.
Yeah man I will. I want to take some across varying times of the day and weather conditions. I think the next cloudless day I'll get out and just shoot some photo's, never actually been up close to it, but passed it loads of times. Just gonna recce the area :)
Cool!
Omg, my mind is blown right now. All of them are 100% perfect. I will use them as my wallpaper. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much. Would be awesome if you like them enough to use as wallpaper! Let me know if you need bigger versions.
Those are in 1680x8400 which is enough for me. Thank you so much. Will look forward for more amazing shots from you.
Well they are 1280 x 853 but if they are big enough that is cool.
Thank you so much :)
Wow absolutely stunning I really am glad I followed you!
Thank you:)
Judging by the crypto markets, red sure seems to be the theme for the day, huh?
Lol yes. I think everything is red today. No idea why though. Any news or reason for it? Haven't caught up online yet.
Just crypto being crypto. I don't sweat over it.
Me neither. If you do you tend to end up panic selling and regretting it later!
Wow, these are incredible, I love the otherworldly feel of these shots and the colors are stunning.
Thanks mate. That's what I love about the partial colour IR filter - it gives a very surreal and artistic look to things - familiar and yet alien.
Definitely, it almost looks like an impressionist painting even.
gona follow for more =D
Thank you:)
Nice colours. Beautifull pictures
Thank you:)
I love how much the UK embraces public art! We are starting to get there here in the states, but it's slow going
I think it has only been in the last 20 years or so and since the economic crisis it has slowed down. Hopefully it will start up again.
Nice contrast! And i have to give compliment to the angle the pictures were taken. Just a little polish and you can be a great photographer. Cheers!!!
Thanks!
welcome!
These are some beautiful shots brother
Thank you:)
These are some nice pictures. Love the colors :)
@trendo
Thank you:)

Thanks mate:)
Wow such a magical place, thank you for introducing me to the "angel of the north"
You're welcome - glad you liked it:)
thank you :D my pleasure
I love IR photography. Please keep them coming.
Thanks will do whenever I get a chance:)
Looks very cool, I thought these were paintings.
No but they have that look because of the weird colours:)
Yeah I figured it out after the third picture, still very cool.
The lighting in your photos is excellent!
Thank you:)
Followed you!
Thanks!
Been there, these photos bring back memories...cheers!
Howay the Lads!
:)
This is an amazing photograph.
The touch ups that you did make it look so serene and beautiful.
Great Job!
Thanks:)
Otherworldly !
Thank you!
You are good with your gadget, I follow. :D
Thanks:)
Cool post! Upvoted!
Thanks!
That is really incredible - both the art piece and your photos :D it's like peanut butter and jelly!
Xo
Thanks!
Please process more, totally worth it, the colors turned out really well
Thank you:)
This is brilliant yet beautiful.
Thank you so much:)
We have a statue here in Bucharest wich looks like your photos
Cool. Do you know what it is meant to be?
Monument to the Heroes of the Air is dedicated to the memory of Romanian military and civilian aviators who contributed to the development of aviation.
OK thanks:)
This is awesome, as well!!
Xo
Whoa, that is a cool perspective. Did you ever watch Battlestar Galactica? Early on Helo was stuck on another planet and the way those pictures are it reminds me of the way it looked on that planet because of the way the sun was there.
Thanks! I did watch it but don't remember that part of it.
It was a small part from season 1 I believe. That Asian chick that ended up being a Cylon was his girlfriend or something and he was trapped on that planet for awhile after it was bombed out by the Cylons.
OK yes I seem to remember that it was in the first season.
I don't know if they went back there at some point in the show. It has been 10 years since I really watched it. That show was so awesome!
Yes it was great!
I love how the colours make this look its lovely :)
Thanks. That is what is great about IR shots - although it is very variable depending on the light, in the right conditions it looks good.
I'm not a very good photographer but do know a good picture when I see one :)
:)
Hey dude! Was already a follower of yours as I'm just getting into crypto, but didn't realise I live just down the road from you. Would be great to chat with you sometime.
Whereabouts are you?
North East. You?
Very close but I think it is best not to put exactly where we are on the blockchain for privacy reasons - that's why I was asking whereabouts. The town on it's own is OK but don't give any more detailed information because scammers could use it to for faking identity and other nefarious purposes.
Good point.
I think you'll be OK but it's probably better to discuss such things in the chat.
Nice shots..i'm curious to know: how do you know the right moment, background or landscape that will produce a great picture? I'm not a photographer or artist, but I love the arts.
I don't think there is an easy answer to this. It is a case of what looks good to me I suppose.
I see..
Wow!
Captivating photos @thecryptofiend
You are doing what you know best.
Thanks!
Great visual Love the contrast
Thank you:)
Very nice, i want to send my 5Dii in to get it converted to IR to have some fun with it before the shutter count get's too high
Thanks. Cool.
Wow. that first image tripped me out. I thought it was a model at first with wings/steampunk/cosplay. I have never heard of or seen that Angel statue before. The last IR photos I remember seeing you post were grey/purple but i haven't been around in a while. This color was really nice. It immediately reminded me of that Robin Williams movie, What dreams may come. Everyone needs to open these up in a separate browser tab to appreciate the details. This set by far is my favorite of your IR photos. Im not blowing smoke. Makes me want to try IR now. This is the 590nm. Is it also called 'super color'? I found one for my camera called '590nm super color' I just want to do some research. very creative. thanks
Yes it's called super colour in some cases. The previous ones had the red and blue channels swapped to make the sky more blue but in this case I thought it made them look worse.
Ok. I didn't realize you had to replace the mirror in the camera. That is full commitment to IR!
It's not the mirror - it's the IR filter (at least in most DSLRs) which if I remember right is actually on top of the sensor.
Way back when I first saw your ir pics I though you were using film. I didn't know it was a conversion or how the process/mechanics worked.
I found this for my camera.
https://www.lifepixel.com/tutorials/infrared-diy-tutorials/life-pixel-sony-a7-diy-digital-infrared-conversion-tutorial
It's like open heart surgery and total commitment. I was hoping it was just a filter on top of the lens or something. anyways, im just gonna have to enjoy your IR photos. these were real good. See ya.
You can do long exposures using a filter but it obviously limits what you can do and the results you can get. I got mine converted through a company because I would probably destroy the camera if I did it myself.
I have an older sony 5N. Plus this camera is no longer under warranty but works great. I would be willing to convert that one. I found this guy last night. That is where I found the '590 super color' $250 I asked you about. Which sounds reasonable for the work it involves. It's like getting a whole new camera. Lots of creative possibilities.
This looks epic, looks like something from Nirvana's - Heart Shaped Box video!
Thank you:)
I love this photoset!!! The combination of the colours is so sick. How did you come up with the idea? Genius :)
I've photographed the Angel a few times - it was just a case of catching it at the right time. The colour you get can shift quite significantly depending on the conditions so a lot of it is down to luck.
Curious what the colour and saturation does. I admit to not being such a Gormley fan but this otherworldly version you created is interesting, an almost burning Nordic landscape, its very dystopian..
I didn't change the colour or saturation.
So, I should have said - curious what the Infrared does! Clever stuff.
Thank you:) It is strange. Sometime the images are very vivid and high contrast, other times they are very flat. I think it is because when you take the photo you can't see how it will look in infrared (since that is the main component of the luminance here).
