On 3rd February 1931 the city of Napier in New Zealands North Island was almost completely levelled by a large earthquake. 256 people died as a result of building collapses and subsequent fires.
The rebuild took on the popular style of the time, Art Deco. Almost all of the original buildings still exist today and are now fully restored and protected.
The unique look and style of the city attracts many visitors, especially during the Art Deco Weekends held in February each year.
I've visited Napier a few times now, including during the festival and it really is a unique place. Great weather, architecture and people.
