I finally made it to see the Great Pyramids of Avery, IA recently. I found out about the off-road secret location by looking for unique places to go in Iowa. What a cool an interesting place! To get there you have to travel on several country roads and go across a one lane wooden bridge (one of the last left in Iowa).
These pyramids were built with the same dimensions of the Pyramids of Egypt only scaled down, in 1939 by Axel Petersen - a frequent study of Egyptian history. The tallest pyramid was about 14 feet tall. Taken from roadsideamerica . com "Sandstone and cement structures built in 1939 for Egyptian pyramid fan Axel Peterson, whose dream (unfulfilled) was to be buried in the big one, sitting at a table across from a close pal (conveniently dead at the same time). Crypt roof of the largest tomb was an upside-down dump truck bed." Sadly Axel's dream of being buried in the pyramids never happened, it is currently unknown where he is buried.
This was well worth the trip and the possible rock chips from the backroads, the place has an energy that is unforgettable. You can feel Axel there despite him not being there. Enjoy the photos I took!
