Memories: creepy pictures form the Sicilian graveyard

in #photography7 years ago

Last year was very special for me, because in January I survived my very first plane flight in the age of almost 23. The same year just few months later together with @deepresearch we went on an expedition to Sicily. The plan was to go around the island on low budget in 10 days.

We rented a combi that became our bedroom and saved us shitload of money and time. Instead of instead of making our journey dependent on accommodation in hostels we enjoyed our freedom and possibility to change our mind last minute. Also it made us aware that 10 days is our limit for sleeping in a car.

Our trip was about to end and we were heading back to Catania when we saw the graveyard. Our attention was dragged by the wall tiled with tombstones. When we saw the entrance we decided to stop the car and go to check it out. And what we saw was amazing. I think it was created around XIX century. It's quite small and narrow and precipitous. Beside the wall densely covered with tombstones, the graveyard is filled with sculptures, monuments and gravestones. Some of them were gorgeous and others rather meh. But from every place and every angle the view was beautiful!

Walking thru the cemetery we were gazing at the photos marking the resting places of the deceased. The ambiance accompanying us was endearing and truly creepy but the most creepy were the photos on the children graves. From the inscriptions we find out that most of the children died either few days, weeks or, less likely, years after being born. The photos were touching, not only because of their age. Usually on grown ups graves the photos show people that were still alive while taking it. Even if some of the children in the photos might be still alive, their life was about to end due to all type of diseases. After realizing how many of them we see I started taking pictures. I have only few and the quality is not the finest but they still are impressive.
