Gunongan is located in the Taman Sari Banda Aceh complex, Aceh. According to historians, the park which was built during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607-1636) was intentionally built specifically as evidence of the strong love of Sultan Iskandar Muda towards his empress, Princess Khamalia from the Kingdom of Pahang, Malaysia.
Gunongan was built during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda who ruled from 1607-1636. At that time, in 1613 and 1615 by attacking the Acehnese expedition force 20,000 sea and land troops, Sultan Iskandar Muda managed to conquer the Kingdom of Johor and the Kingdom of Pahang on the Malay Peninsula. As is the tradition in ancient times, kingdoms that lost the war had to surrender the glorification of war, tribute and annual taxes. In addition, the princess must also be handed over to be brought as a sign of submission. Boyongan's daughter was usually married by the king in order to strengthen the kinship of the kingdom he conquered, so that the victorious kingdom became bigger and stronger. The Conquest of the Kingdom of Johor and the Kingdom of Pahang on the Malay Peninsula had a major influence on Iskandar Muda. Princess Boyongan of Pahang, who was very beautiful and delicate in his language, made Sultan Iskandar Muda fall in love and make him an empress. For the sake of his enormous love, Sultan Iskandar Muda was willing to fulfill his queen's request to build a beautiful sari garden, complete with Gunongan as a place to entertain himself so that the empress's longing for the atmosphere of the mountains in his place of origin was fulfilled
