'Coats of Arms'
These were important back when writing and reading was only thought to nobles. Coats of arms representing their Lord's family was the only thing that was the difference between friend's and foe's armed men. Weird to see a duck on that one. :)

Heraldry, as I think it's called, was an art in medieval times. The emblems can be very obvious, like those of the eagle or the wolf; others not so much, including the one you refer to.
In medieval times, especially in Europe, these coats of arms were very important, as they represented not only hierarchy but also lineage. many of the images on these coats of arms represent or symbolize something. What could a duck represent? Curious! Greetings, @velimir.
