The Cappadocia region is the most beautiful place of nature and history in the world. While geographical events created the Peribacalari, in the historical process, people became the houses and churches of these peribacles and adorned them with frescoes, making the traces of ancient civilizations thousands of years old.

The underground cities of Cappadocia are among the unique beauties of Anatolia, with unbelievable surprises hidden underneath the formation of the extraordinary fairy chimneys of the region. These underground cities, which cover an area of 25 thousand square kilometers, are big and small rock settlements in the towns and villages of the entire Cappadocia region.

Some of these settlements, built with soft volcanic slopes carved downwards, are large enough to accommodate 30 thousand people. It is known that these cities were built to be used as a shelter in a dangerous way due to various attacks from the Cappadocia region in the past.

Although the sight to Cappadocia is overwhelmed by most fairy chimneys, the number of underground settlements of various sizes, one of the most interesting cultural riches of Cappadocia, is around 150-200. Today, only seven of them can be visited.

These cities, built in the same volcanic pebble underground with fairy chimneys cut to the ground due to the natural structure of the region, have common kitchens, tandems, food warehouses, ventilation chimneys that still work and connect the underground directly to the earth, living and bedrooms.

There are churches, missionary schools and wine cellars in these underground settlements of the Cappadocia region known to live intensely as a Christian population. It is known that the Christians, who are known to have lived here for a long time, came down to the ground to escape the Arab races that came to spread Islam, stayed for 2-3 weeks, and returned again.
