Increasing our timber stock

in #photos2 years ago

Long story in a nutshell. Since winter is already around the corner and wood prices are certainly not going down any more, we have also stocked up our wood inventory. This photo shows the just arrived delivery, there is some more already in our garden.

We had various options for this and also exchanged ideas with our neighbours in advance, especially regarding prices and availability, and ultimately decided on a well-known farmer in the region. He delivers various locally grown and harvested goods to the neighbourhood every fortnight anyway, such as eggs, potatoes and onions. On the spur of the moment, we called him the day before his next delivery and asked him if he also had wood in stock and would deliver it. And he did indeed have some, and he said he could bring it over the next day. The price was about the same as the neighbours reported from their suppliers and so we agreed.

We ended up paying 300 euros for 5 cubic metres, which corresponds to a full trailer on his tractor, including transportation and unloading.

After sizing, the volume decreased a bit and it is now obviously more like four cubic metres, but he was one of the cheaper ones here in the region, and since he is a reliable farmer from the area who has been known to us for a long time, it wouldn't have been so bad if we had paid a bit more or if he had pinched off a bit more.

Well, as you can see in the pictures, we have slung the delivery against the side wall of our garden shed and built a temporary roof.

This is to protect the wood from humidity, moisture and weather in the next few days, should it rain, and will most likely be built even sturdier or completely replaced in a timely manner, i.e. before the real winter comes.

But we don't only have the logs to stoke up, but of course also the small stuff, like you can see here, or the pine cones that were all included in the delivery or that the farmer dumped into our driveway.

Last but not least, a first impression of how the wood does in the tiled stove.

Nothing spectacular, of course, and it's actually too early and too warm atm to heat it now.

However, it gives a nice cosy atmosphere in the evenings.

Good work. In srilanka we haven't winter. So I like to feel experiences of winter. Like rain of snow.

Yay! 🤗
