Yes yes yes, the obvious answer is to use markdown. But how does it work? Is the picture loaded on to some site? Must I register somewhere to upload the content I would like to use?

Yes, the picture needs to be uploaded to a site like imgsafe.org and then you can paste the link of the image directly into the text box you use to make a post. Images uploaded at imgur doesn't work though due to imgur's rules and regulations.
turn on editor when you start creating the blog, then press image button and paste the url of your picture
