I Met A Guy

A small guy. I was just chillin' out in the Mariposa Grove at Yosemite National Park, doing what I normally do, staying completely away from people. It's quite easy in the Mariposa Grove, most people don't even know about it because of Half Dome and El Capitan and Yosemite Falls and really, Yosemite in general. To most, it's just a place they drive by. But it's an incredibly peaceful grove of Sequoia Trees, the largest living creatures on the planet.

A Gnome by any other Gname

He'd snuck up on me, I didn't even hear him. Maybe because I was seriously considering a nap, or had possibly even commenced. He stuck out his tiny little hand and said "I'm Gnomer. You got anything to say about that?"

"Why would I have anything to say about that?"

"Everybody laughs at my name. Everybody." said Gnomer.

"Yeah? But I don't give two shits what your name is." said I.

You'd have thought I hit him by his reaction. He literally collapsed on the ground. "Gnomes don't ever talk that way." he croaked.

It was then that I realized that he was really close. Being near asleep I hadn't realized he was in my personal space and was REALLY little. I felt bad about knocking him to the ground.

"Oh. Sorry. If you will back up just a little I'll try to do better with my mouth."

A Wailing and Gnashing of Teeth

Gnomer proceeded to tell me his story. First he asked if I wanted a beer. "Nope. Thanks. I don't drink." Honest to God he turned and walked directly into a crack in the nearest tree trunk. He came out with a regular 12 oz bottle of Bud and made himself comfortable. I could not believe what I'd seen.

He told me a tale of woe about himself and his people. How he'd been named by insensitive parents and was bullied all his life because of it. How he couldn't get a decent job or a good tree to live in. No woman would expose herself to the ridicule that his name brought on.

Everybody in his circle thought he was stupid because he had a stupid name. By the time he got around to his third beer he got to the heart of the matter. The trees his people lived in were in trouble and though most of them looked healthy they were dying.

There apparently was some hot shot power couple that was working on the tree problem. Emma and Fred. They were using psychedelics to try to figure out the problem. Being sort of anti social Gnomer decided to find a solution and get out of Gnomeville at the same time. He'd read about the Mariposa Grove and came to check it out.

Rode all the way on a motorcycle (or more correctly, a scooter. A Honda Ruckus that was way big for him). He wheeled it right out of the tree, like there was nothing to it. I asked for a picture of him and his bike, but he refused. Seems you can't take pictures of Gnomes.

He did have a bit of sculpture of him that I could take a picture of. Stored in the tree, of course.

At The End

I haven't been back to the Mariposa Grove (or Yosemite) in several years. I have no idea if the Gnomes of Gnomeville solved their tree problem using Fred and Emma's methods or if they chose the enlightened and easy way of living in the Sequoias. I've always kind of rooted for the underdog and Gnomer has that covered. Come on back for the next installment to find out.

Playlist

Every decent story needs some music. Check out Montrose with "Get On Your Bad Motorscooter and Ride". Yes, that's a very young Sammy Hagar as frontman.

HA! What an unlikely and fascinating encounter. I'd like to take a nap under those trees...

I'm not good with fiction. I've tried it enough times in the last 50 years to have a grip on that.

So this is a hybrid sort of story. I can tell you for an absolute fact that there might not be a better place for a nap than the Mariposa Grove. That part of the story is pure truth. With the rest you'll have to decide yourself :)

We need a video intro of gnomer rolling up on his scooter beer in hand, with that song in the back ground.

Could just be some crazy guy in the woods going off about gnomes though lol.

Who you callin' crazy? :)

lol, Ya really never know where a story like this could turn 😏

Now I wonder if Gnomer just stumbled on Gnome-one's secret grove? It remains to be seen... but this chapter could just be a nice circling back on the story. Nice one,@bigtom13 !PIZZA !ALIVE

@bigtom13! You Are Alive so I just staked 0.1 $ALIVE to your account on behalf of @samsmith1971. (4/10)

Well, you know? I don't even know if it's the same grove. I can tell you it would be a great place to live whether you're a person or a gnome or maybe even a troll!

hahaha It looks amazing!!!

Wow! Cool stems

Thanks for stopping by.

I love that you threw some Montrose in there! I got to see Sammy a couple of years ago and he included some stuff from this time in his life in the show. My buddy went to Cabo this past Spring and made a point of going to the Cabo Wabo Cantina.

A Ruckus is a bad motorscooter!

I've been a fan of Sammy's since these days. I just love his voice.

Thanks for stopping by, bozz!

Yeah, he is awesome!

LEO Power Up Day - June 15, 2023

wooow, wonderful pic man.

Ugggghhh. I have almost no pictures of Sequoia trees. I lost an auxiliary hard drive a few years ago, and two years ago I had a corrupted SD card in my camera. That pic is a good representation of the Mariposa Grove, but it's from Pixabay.

It would be great for me to see such a tree nearby. I have heard that they are the longest-lived on earth and boy are they! Magnificent shots. A hug for you

The Sequoias are not the longest lived. That would be the Bristlecone Pine. The oldest was mature when Jesus walked the earth.

They are crazy protected. There are 3 known groves and you can't find them on any map exactly. I know of one other small population and have heard of another.

I LOVE, LOVE what you did to help the story along!!!

You made me very happy!!!

HUGE HUGS!

Thanks Snook!

I had a great time thinking about and writing this piece. As far as the story goes it didn't move the needle very far, but I had fun.

"Lets do it again sometime!"

Hello my friend! 😊

Excellent addition to the story, you had me smiling the whole way through, thanks for a great start to my day! 😊

I can't wait to see where the next author decides to take it! 😊

God bless you and yours. Have an awesome day my friend! 😊

Thank you! For the support and kind words.

I had great fun writing my part. I knew it was going to include Gnomer from the very first :)

For the record: I do love the Mariposa Grove and Yosemite in general. For me it's a magical place. The Sequoias there aren't near as big as the ones at Sequoia National Park but the setting is special. I'm sitting here thinking about stopping in on my next trip by (in less than a month). Probably will happen...

You're most welcome! My pleasure. 😊

I loved the name Gnomer, it made me smile like a loon for some reason, not sure why, but it did. LOL! 😊

I've never been to Yosemite; I'm a Canadian and have only been to a few US cities, and I'm directionally/geographically challenged so I'm not even sure which state Yosemite is in if I'm being 100% honest. 😊

I love the look of trees, can't tell most of them from others, but enjoy them all the same. 😊

I'm glad you liked the name. When Snook first started this and I knew I had a part of it the name just came to me. After several weeks it was still with me :)

Yosemite is in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains in California. It was John Muir's favorite place. I can certainly see why. The top location for rock climbing (Half Dome and El Capitan) and nearly unbelievable scenery everyplace. It's a magical place.

Sequoia trees are big. Really, really big. Those in the picture (and in most of the Mariposa Grove) are smallish. General Grant and General Sherman in Sequoia NP are thought to be the two largest living things on earth. Those pictures you see of cars driving through holes in trees? Sequoias.

I did, it was the perfect name for a gnome, in my opinion, my favourite name, so far, from the series...I'll have to wait and see if anyone else comes up with a name that tops it, later. LOL! 😊

Sequoia's are beautiful, those commercials with the cars driving through are quite impressive, they are massive trees. 😊

There are a couple of tress that were felled, hollowed out, and people actually lived in them. I really wish I had the pictures.

That would be quite a site to see, people living inside hollowed out Sequoias, yep, a site to see indeed. 😊

lmao love the personalization intertwined my dude! 😎
