When the sun shone bright,
And the dark was night,
When the birds could sing
And the world was right.
When a days work done,
Kept a family fed,
With a gran and a mum
And a loo in the shed!
When we could see the way
Of our lives lived well,
When we had fair play
To the ring of a bell.
Was the means to an end
The way it turned out?
Was the we we expected
To be all for nowt?
The myth of society,
In a 1 bedroom flat.
Linked up thru a wire,
The screens where it's at!
A bitter pill for me
To face the new day,
To maintain productivity,
This unit of pay!
Got my loyalty cards full,
Collect my nectar and club,
All my 2 for 1 bull,
Grab my Starbucks and sub.
And my kids don't recall
Those blue remembered hills,
Just know that they're sad
On the tv and pills.
Is the advertised life
Of the mum in the sun
Just the trouble and strife
We sow, still to come?
Two point four cars
Until the poor bleed,
We give the earth scars
To get all that we need.
Belching out fumes,
To grow ourselves out,
Of stagnation and debt
speculation and doubt.
Does the whispering dead,
In their grave rotting stink,
Feel the rise of the tide
See the lies in the ink?
When the means come to an end,
We won't even know,
To make our amends,
Cut down in a row.
