Our Desire for Revenge

in #poetry7 years ago

In 2001 two towers were destroyed
and many innocent people died.
In our shock we cried revenge
and demanded it be satisfied.

The powers that be, they readily agreed
to go to war as the people desired.
This heroic deed by the powers that be,
was by all of the people, admired!

A wonderful thing for the powers that be,
as the peoples shock evolved into anger.
The powers that be were happy to see
the people now ignoring the danger.

Unsatisfied were the powers that be,
with taking just one country out.
Their effective use of smoke and mirrors
gave the people no shadow of doubt

that the country they loved would do in their name,
what the anger in their hearts required.
Our desire for revenge has turned into hate,
by which all, it seems, are inspired.

God? If You're there, just listen to me
for I need to ask You some questions.
How many lives may our revenge take
before You consider them transgressions?

How many innocents may our revenge claim
before You find it's enough?
How many soldiers must fall for our sake?
before You decide to get tough?

Where is it again that You keep Your love,
while Your children's hearts fill with hate?
It's not obvious, you see? So hurry the fuck up,
and fix this before it's too late!

But, if it's Your will that our hearts fill with hate,
then I confirm it's been a success!
So I'll take them all back, my faithless words,
for who am I to want anything less?
