Starving: The "Deep State" and Disaster Capitalism

in #poetry7 years ago (edited)

They send our kids off
Dying for oil
Shell and BP
Enjoying the spoils

Outsourced war
Turned it into a business
Halliburton, Blackwater
Stacking the riches

Donated to the tsunami relief?
They kicked all the locals from the beach
Used your cash to build tourist retreats

And what about New Orleans?
Man they left that place diseased
Unclean
Help nowhere to be seen

Rich vultures swooped straight on the scene
Sold the schools 'fore the levy had broken
Hospitals, public housing
Never to be reopened

I ain't joking
Pretty read up
Though I sound like a bogan

Don't think this stuff is happening around you?

Take a look around dude
Take a look around bra
They selling our phonelines
They selling our power

Every hour
While you're sleeping
They be plotting
They be leeching
Distracting y'all with their mindless preaching

They're taking our gold
They're taking our ore
They'd take our souls
If only they could pass the law

I'm bloody past it all
Bloody starvin y'all
Sick of halvin all
While these rich are growing fat
and bloody laughin more

Got me thinkin ...

If I don't get fed
Get equal
Start eating
Rich people

Damn I was an angry yout.
Wrote that as a rap years ago after reading Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism.

Well worth a read if you're interested in the real 'deep state'.

Post inspired by @mikepedro's share of a song by Ezekiel Ox

20% of post rewards will be split with @Centerlink as usual, but I'm getting a bunch of errors on the Steemwhales platform so this will have to be done manually again. @heimindanger - invalid title size, expected 138 got 32, transaction operations and characters not base 52 ... getting a new error each time I close and attempt to repost ... have cleared cookies)

Nice - I am a social worker in New Orleans and my colleagues know how I (very angrily) feel about this odd infrastructure, where among other things, every disaster is seen as an opportunity to entice federal funds, developers, or industry looking for subsidy... I also lived in Mobile, AL when the BP Oil Spill happened. I can really get wordy about these things, so I'll just stop there.
Are you from around the gulf?

Hey mate, yeah it's bloody despicable. Don't need conspiracy, the reality is grim enough. I'm from Australia, hence the rhyming might sound a little off - it works with an Aussie accent!

Respect for the career choice, tough gig even in affluent cities. Would love to visit New Orleans, really enjoyed Treme - music, food and fusion of cultures looks amazing.

Thanks man, look forward to more of your posts.

Cheers mate, following you back and just posted a couple tracks from a few years ago as requested by Jason. Not the best example of what Aus has to offer, but will still be interesting if you've only ever heard Iggy Azalea's fake accent tripe.

Gotta love a platform that will pay you today for work you did years ago. Maybe you should record and upload an mp3 :)

Hahaha yep and that 5 SBD is more than I ever made in Aussie Hip Hop!

Don't rap no more, but will do a post with a couple tracks from a few years ago once I work out how to embed soundcloud.
