The Legacy of Surin

in #poetry7 years ago

Hello All,

I'm Matt I write songs and poetry. This is the backstory to where my inspiration came from for this particular poem:

I'd been been working hard building my first tech startup, traveling a lot to events, raising capital, negotiating deals, and managing my team. The whole experience had put a lot of stress on my past relationship and it had come to an agreed end. That fall I had even more work to do meeting investors and just being stuck in the cycle with no break so I needed to leave and isolate to clear my head and center myself.

I decided to go to a National Park called Koh Surin which is in the middle of the Andaman Sea between Thailand and Indonesia. I camped and had time to think and write. Right at the beginning of my camping experience monkeys decided to steal my good food and I ended up finding their mango trees in revenge hahaha. I ate my ramen and had a good stash of cheap rum to keep me inspired ;)

In the nights it was completely dark except for the light from the stars. I would drink rum and walk along the beach as the flying foxes flew directly above my head. I felt alone and stranded and amazing. It was windy and there was no electricity so when I chilled before sleep I had to build a cave for the candles out of giant clam shells, leaves, and rocks. Here is what came out and I hope you enjoy:

bats flying against the backdrop lit only by the stars

beautiful darkness reminding me of how small and alone I am

sometimes wishing I had someone to lie awake with me on the beach gazing into infinity

when will i feel this moment again, the sound of waves my only company

no electricity and only nature, heart beating, God calling

the moment won't come again soon enough, i sleep in an abyss stranded from the world of men

my heart is burning bright, lighting up the night

sharing this moment with only earth

can't help but feel amazed even in loneliness, how lucky am i to be here

alive right now

a candle in a cave.... the legacy of surin

I look only to the good qualities of men. Not being faultless myself, I won't presume to probe into the faults of others.
