POP MUSIC HAIKU: Friday (Rebecca Black)

in #poetry7 years ago (edited)

Traditionally, pop music hasn't been viewed as a modality of deep expression. However, there are times when an artist gently and compassionately navigates the complex inner struggle all humans face as they attempt to find peace and happiness in a difficult world. Call it a stroke of luck, a twinkle of genius or possibly a months long struggle with IBS that explosively manifests in a beautifully nuanced prelude to the upcoming weekend. Ms. Black's tribute to the weekend not only serves as an instructive guide for the specific ordering of the days of the week, but it also inspires listeners to remain cognizant of a beautifully simplistic truism: the weekend is fun.

Rebecca Black's 2011 smash hit single "Friday" was an instant sensation, setting YouTube records and thrusting this young starlet onto the international music scene. Seven years have passed, and in pop music this roughly correlates to approximately 236 Earth years (Gregorian calendar). In this wide chasm of time, it is possible that people have forgotten Ms. Black's contribution, or perhaps, some budding music aficionado from the new generation has yet to christen his/her ears with the beautiful sound of Rebecca's nasally, anti-charismatic, auto-tuned mezzo-soprano.

For my part, I've taken it upon myself to celebrate the 7th anniversary of "Friday" by dedicating my humble poem, aptly titled "Friday". If you feel moved or inspired on this, the 7th anniversary of "Friday", I encourage you to leave your own personal tribute in the comments.

~Friday~

Today is Friday;
Cereal, bus stop, party.
It's fun, fun, fun, fun.

Haha this is quite funny. I actually saw a few videos recently where she sang in some of Kurt Hugo Schneider's Youtube covers, and she's actually pretty good, I was impressed!

Yeah, I know right? I saw something she had done fairly recently, good voice. She does an excellent job of capturing the utter awkwardness (though, I doubt it was intended for this purpose...but i could be wrong ;) of the teenage years in this vid.

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I love Fridays.
Ignore my sucky Friday-tribute, I just wanted to compliment your sense of humor

many thanks @maddieseal :)

I think your poem is lovely. So much so that I have blessed you with $.03. Mostly because 3 is beautifully symmetrical to the number of lines written. But also mostly because $.03 is the maximum value of my vote. Go nuts, spend it all at once.

I appreciate your incredible generosity, you're a good man @danielshortell :)

I've never heard this song before, kinda catchy. Thanks for sharing. I was late to see it so I upvoted your comment instead.
