RE: The mountains I've climbed - Poem

in #poetry6 years ago

This kindof scares me right now - we are living in a forest now and we have an insane amount of ticks on us every day! Both My son and his father showed the signs of Lyme disease, but both got cured by antibiotics after seeing the red circle. around the bite. I just wait for my turn.
But then someone comes and tells me that what they give here in Denmark is not enough to kill the disease, and I am not sure the doctor really knew.. i really hope my son is cured, but maybe I should get a check..
But it is really common on this island, so I hope they know what they are dealing with, the doctors.... A friend of mine's mother had it 3 times, and she is not living in a forest with 3-7 bites a day....!

The problem with Lyme (Borrelia and the co-infections that come with it) is that a single round of antibiotics is not effective. Yes, not all ticks carry the bacteria, I agree. But Borrelia is one of the smartest bacterias ever, as it becomes immune to the meds. It shields itself in a protective film that anbiotics can't break.
Also, not all people will develop the red bull's eye rash! Those who don't get it, may never think of being infected, thus they will not have those two weeks of antibiotics, which can help if administrated right after the bite.
If it wasn't confusing enough, some people will develop symptoms only at a later stage when the disease has spread. Usually that happens when their immunity system is lower than usual.
As far as I know there is no cure for Lyme. You can only keep some of the symptoms under control with diet, exercise and either meds or herbal protocols.
Living in an tick endemic area like yours is very challenging. I hope your son and his dad will feel better. Be well!
