Behind the Mask of Smiles

in #poetry7 years ago

Your eyes, so blue and bewitching
Smiling effortlessly from both ends
Lodging behind those fine curtains
Of lashes and painted brows
Towards the West of that smile sits
A dimple deep enough to eat a finger

Your face is an epitome of beauty
But this face knows no joy nightly
Waning by the approaching sunset
As you set your pillow to a journey
Of Tears -absorbing.
Dampening your sheets with salty water
From once dazzling eyes at daytime

Grief, your nocturnal friend is tired
Of coming like Nicodemus.
His unfortunate brother, anxiety who
Loves company above all,
Has himself given up on you .
They insist on visiting at daytime
But you wouldn't let them escape
From behind the Mask of Smiles.
A smokescreen of glossy skin

But today this pent up steam threw
The lid off and gushed out
You forgot your mask or they probably
Had a prison break when you let out
That big cry at school library
You've had it up your throat
And your emotions and smokescreens
Came gushing from their vents

We just wear it to survive the jungle we live in!
To protect ourselves but sometimes we got caught in it and lose the self.

smiles hide most of our emotional problem but it breaks when you hold it for so long and you didnt see a comfort who sees your problem from the smile and behavioural dispositions .

Thanks man. That's so encouraging.

I can relate to this. Sometimes we bottle up emotions to look nice or avoid quarrel and make peace, funny thing is we don't even know when they will burst open and then a lot of things would have gone wrong by then.

That's right. In a world where everyone wants to feel alright, these things thrive.

Smiles are smokescreen in which we hide our emotions but sometimes they fail us when the burden is too much to bear.
Hoping to learn from you bro

That's right. The fact is, people can't tell the difference. When we genuinely smile and when we just smile to obscure some untold frustrations. Thanks bro, I hope to learn from you too.

Lovely poetry @harrywill, it made me remember those good old days I was a poetry freak. Now the days are no more. Would surely come back to read another one .
@antigenx

Lol. You can still bring back those good days of yore afore. You can become a freak again okay. Lol, freak in a loose sense. Or something more! Sure, you can visit anytime dear.

This piece is great. Stored up emotions can really be scary when the person finally erupts. I know this first hand. I can imagine the expression on people's faces when she broke down (assuming this is a real story tho).

Nice work.

Lol. It's a mere fiction. Although borne out of real life imaginations. It imbues it with life. Sure, everyone should be shocked she could cry. I mean the cynosure of all eyes could cry. Omg! And her tendrils of beauty got plucked and rotten.
