There’s no strangeness
Or disappointment
It’s not as bright
As those first mornings
Not as colorful
Or full of excitement
I’m not a kite aloft
Blown to Mexico
You’re not on a flight
To Florida
We’re settled now
In our Victorian village
With distant train sounds
And nightly coyotes
And all that disturbs our peace
Is Trump on TV...
Well, that and our children.
Argh, can you believe we live in a time where we actually do need to acknowledge Trump in our art? I’ve read a few good pieces of fiction lately (one really good one on littlefiction.com) that mention him.
well, he's part of our interior landscape - haven't had nightmares yet, so that's a consolation :)
Lucky you—i’m terrified and it definitely results in nightmares!
I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at this. 😄
Beautiful photo and beautiful words, John. Abi and I love that style of home.
thanks, lydon - around here it's called a century home - built back in the days of the Second Empire (British, that is) - Victorian to you, lol
Not our house though....just sayin'....not our house. It's only a wishful thinking one on a lonely country road surrounded by orchards.
Oh, that is great! A little alliterative humor at the end! Kites and flights are overrated. Together and Settled is good. Blessings
thank you, Lynne :) I agree
Very nice John. I enjoy how you put trump's impact above the children's.
ha ha, they're running neck and neck
I came in here planning on providing a full critique, but there is very, very little I would change. The only issue I have is that "There is no strangeness" is a little redundant considering you've already said you're familiar. Otherwise, this poem is incredible as is.
thanks, Matt - you're right, the line's redundant - repetition for emphasis? lol
Haha! That's a good enough defense for me.
Love it; there's something magical about being comfortable with someone! When I was younger I might have equated it with boring...thankfully I am older and wiser now. And I love your 'Trump' comment!
Thanks, Lynn - with age comes wisdom, usually :)
It's what we tell ourselves anyway:)
love it :)
For us it's paw patrol. LOL
Hi John,
I'm back among the living again. Here to disturb you peace and annoy you with another upvote.
Joe
PS Nice poem. You must be getting as old as I. The only part you forgot is, kid get off'n my lawn!
ha ha, Thanks Joe - good to see you again
Married bliss! It's a blessing to be settled. And an even bigger blessing to stay settled!

Is it bad if I like the photograph more than the poem? :)
Joking. I love them both. Reminds me of Radiohead's song named "No surprises". Followed!
Ok, you made Trump a component of an amazing art piece. If that's not real (Heck, more like miraculous) talent, i don't know what is. :)
