When We Were Young - Original Poem

Those spring days when we were young,
we'd wake with the morning's sun to reach the beach before it's peak,
as the crowds begin to swarm it signaled it's time to move on,
so we'd retreat to the barbies for the waiting feed,
than talk about how we can't eat any more than plan a picnic for lunch,
on those spring days when we were young.

Those spring days when we were young,
we'd jump in the car with the full esky and beer,
drive up the mountains and go for a bushwalk,
before finding another barbie for the picnic to get going,
after another feed and the grog freely flowing we decide that it's time for us to go dancing,
on those spring days when we were young.

Those spring days when we were young,
we'd call around our friends to see,
where the nearest house party may be,
to drink and dance the night away,
until the sun came to usher in a new day,
on those spring days when we were young.

Those summer days when we were young,
we'd suffer through school in the blistering heat,
moving from class to class counting down the minutes,
waiting for the bell to ring to signal our final release,
we'd grab our gear and get our bag and race across the field,
on those summer days when we were young.

Those summer days when we were young,
we'd run through the traffic to get the first train,
racing to make it to the courts in time,
to claim the space and for our friends to arrive,
take shots for teams and play until the light gave out,
on those summer days when we were young.

Those summer days when we were young,
the sky would grow dark and the clouds would thicken,
the breeze would pick up and the smells would sweeten,
streaks of green in the sky would see us running for home,
knowing any moment that the hail was about to arrive,
on those summer days when we were young.

Those autumn days when we were young,
we'd tire of our simple lives,
and decide it's time for our next road trip,
with three full cars and hours on the road,
the tunes that we'd brought could all be heard,
on those autumn days when we were young.

Those autumn days when we were young,
to cold to swim we'd fish instead,
we'd head out on the tinnie or the pier instead,
cast our lines and wait our time,
chat and laugh until our first bite,
on those autumn days when we were young

Those autumn days when we were young,
back in the cars to continue our drive,
ensuring our mates all new the way,
we'd travel for days to find a new place,
then plan to come back the next chance we had,
on those autumn days when we were young.

Those winter days when we were young,
with summer gone the nights are long,
so a camping trip was was in the mix,
we'd pack our gear and check the cars,
and tell our mum's where we were going to be,
on those winter days when we were young.

Those winter days when we were young,
with two more stops one for fuel and one for grog,
and then sure enough we were off,
we'd travel the coast to find a space,
where we could make our own private place,
on those winter days when we were young.

Those winter days when we were young,
fighting daylight we'd set up camp,
and before long the bonfire would roar to keep us all warm,
we'd laugh, drink and eat surrounding the fire
lay on our backs and stare up at the stars,
on those winter days when we were young

I enjoyed the read and now that I am older can relate so well. Keep the posts coming. I also post in poetry, if you have time check out my work @beginningtoend.

Thanks I'm so glad you liked it, I'm a bit out of practice with poetry so was worried it wouldn't transfer as well from how I read it to how it's read.

I will have so much to write I couldn't stop if I wanted to, so posts will keep coming for sure.

I am much more a fiction writer, usually full stories or flash fiction - but when I get a chance I will definitely check out your work. Cheers :)

you just made me cry, we all have the same simple pleasures really, and you made me smile because we're all still so young (YET AS OLD AS TIME ITSELF...: )

Ohh thanks hun, love emotional responses - and yes we only feel age because of our perception of time, we are still young lol :P

I thought you might like it just feels so Aussie, the more I wrote it the more I'm like not sure how many other countries where kids grew up like this - gotta love Aus.

I'm glad you liked it, poetry isn't my strongest suit but I still give it a go.
