Poem - Child of War

in #poetry7 years ago

I wrote this a while ago when stories of child soldiers in North-West Africa were running the rounds on social media - I've watched some documentaries on it, it's such a massive problem - these kids are taken from their homes and fed drugs to ensure they're desensitized and motivated to kill. It doesn't get the attention or action it deserves, I really hope this is something we can solve as a human race.

Child of War

I am a child
yet have no fun
I am a child
yet wield a gun

I am a child
And so were they
I am a child
And I heard them pray

And I shot
and I killed
And I claimed my reward
And I craved
And I fixed
And I forgot what I heard

And I live not a life
I have died long ago
And I dream not of peace
but of screams and of holes
and of blood and of torture
and of burnt mother's moans
and of fire and bombs
and white dust for my nose

I am a child.
