Illusions

Like turned to Love. Love turned to Marriage.
Marie was tall and golden, a professor of Art.
Ned built skyscrapers that tickled the clouds.
Their babies came, grew up, departed.
Then lovers arrived, yawned, and left.
But one young lovely finally captured
Ned's aging heart, wrinkled body, and bank account.
It was very early Autumn when he packed a suitcase,
hugged Marie, and slinked off with his guilt.

Marie emptied the closet of his ties, suits, and
lies. Then she sat in the back yard, eyes closed,
and listened to the rush of wind through the
cottonwood trees, a sound so much like flowing water,
she felt fine drops like tears on her face.
When she heard a familiar voice and whistle,
Marie smiled and rose to greet her lover,
Warmed by his loving eyes and burning passion.
Wind to water, loss to gain, solitude to love again.

An illusory cottonwood leaf breaks free and soars
into the sky, until it transforms into a black and golden
Oriole, flapping its way relentlessly to the sun.
