Confusing time out there for some of us. Time for a virtual fairy tale that might help explain ... why, why, why ... with me as your humble narrator. Let's begin.
Imagine a time of jubilation and relief for a little more than half of a totally made up realm, upon almost exactly one half of the people regaining the throne from the other half of the subjects. Kind of but not really. Because it is not really a throne, but an office. We will call the first half, of these people, of this completely fabricated existence, the Montagues. Conversely, as if some nonchalant, theatrical bard-type demigod flipped a coin, the other half, the half that used to hold sway and sceptre, used to hold the crown, is devastated and painfully bemused. This set we will call the Capulets. Don't get ahead of yourself, this is no love story, at least not yet.
Many a Capulet are lost in an existential crisis, consumed by a deep grief, angry and confused, at the loss of state court. Heartbreaking to the more empathetic and often newly-minted among the Montague. As they watch the histrionic-inclined Capulets almost split a vein in despair; they would give them a hug if the Capulets wouldn't rend them to pieces in their fugue. In reality, the Capulets have only been asked to move over a little on the dais, open their eyes a little wider, and share decision-making. There are actually reformed Capulets among the Montague who will influence royal edicts. Some very good subjects with the strength to stand up for what is right, even when it is unpopular.
See, the Capulets believed the Montague cold and cruel-hearted, only concerned with gold and procreation, corrupted by non-mechanized religion; believed the Montague to have an odd habit of walking lock-step and shunning diversity. When in truth, the Montague are myriad, more likely to revel in stilted dancing, Charlie Brownesque moves, and generally intent on keeping their own beat. Getting the Montague to walk in-sync is like herding lone wolves with a limp and itchy iconoclasts addicted to syncopation. Tragically, the Montagues were made a little too lone, out in the woods, near to half a decade in the cold. When the Capulets sat the thrown, they pushed the Montagues to the edges of creation, pushed disagreeable Capulets to the Montagues. The Fringe is large, but if you push enough disagreeables with their own sense of rhythm to the edge, they eventually collide, build tempo, and resonate together. Inspired conductors were silenced, and so a pre-existing majorette, who would much rather be golfing, ended up leading our staccato, but persistent marching band triumphantly back into the royal city.
After all the unintended cruelty imposed upon them for their intended 'own good', the Montagues now believed the Capulets simple-minded, savage, and amoral, despite the Capulet's tendency to sing their own virtual praises. Granted both sides are often guilty of crowing. Both Montague and Capulet are after all only human.
It wasn't the really the Capulet's fault. Perhaps in their stead, the Montagues would have fallen for the same coup des senses. The Capulets were misled by charlatan apothecaries, masquerading as nurses and learned friars. Monsters were made of the little and humble Montagues, when in reality they were the Capulet's cousins, loving the same and working hard to maintain the kingdom. They just saw things differently and wanted a little more research and testing. No, the Montagues were not to blame and did not deserve ostracizing, anymore than the Capulets now deserve ridicule, for being lied to, and having their virtue and fear played upon by scamsters and hidden puppet masters.
I admit this story is getting unwieldy and long. I too crave a love scene. I blame the screen writers and stage managers, the big-time money producers, those that rule behind the curtain, those that believe the crown can only be won with the little people, both Montague and Capulet, divided in two.
Perhaps they could forget frivolous tiaras and golden wands altogether. Maybe the people should concentrate on the comfortable robes for the many and castle tapestries. Create a realm of comfort, belonging, and love. Alas no fabric can be made whole unless both sides come together. Maybe then we can get our happy, warm and romantic ending. Stay tuned.
Humans spent hundreds of thousand of years, millions depending on who you talk too, with no screens to fill those last hours before bed. We had nothing more, but each other's warmth and voices, perhaps the heat of a fire, and the star's illumination to soften the darkness. Then we had dreams. Now, we have screens and dreams and nightmares brought to animation in pixels and technicolor. We have confused artificially ballooned celebrities, and bit part influencers, with heavenly bodies and blue shifted prognosticators.
Just like the stars that nurture life and light the way, the tinselled are too set against darkness. Unlike the priceless pulsars and constellations, the warmth of each other, what the cinematically fused offer is inauthentic, fabricated by the highest bidder, designed to have us endlessly consume, and leave us undernourished.. They only shine by leaving the rest of us in the dark, chasing the unobtainable, and herding us into the clutches of the spirit and mind predatorial.
There is another way to lead and to influence; rather than making yourself the center of everything, or setting up some icon, puppet, or celebrity to mislead and misinform, to split the populace in two and at set them at each other. A wise and just ruler ... leader might be a better term ... yes let's go with leader. A leader looks for the balance and promotes a people's ingenuity, but also sees to their nurture and future. A leader does not consume her own people and abuse them with horror stories; a leader does not fabricate fear and hatred among her people.
Well, I will leave it there. I don't know if I did help to sooth anyone this week. I hope so and maybe helped you to understand, to glimpse a perspective that might help ease the suffering of the Capulets among us. One more poem from the Tao to follow.
I love you.
